why does my system memory keep on piling up?

My phone is Lumia 540 running Windows 8.1, recently it's system memory has risen rapidly from it's normal levels of less than 4.5 GB to 6.35 GB currently.
I can't even access my WhatsApp because phone's free memory is now less than 50 MB
Please help me out, this problem costs me a lot
