Why is the keyboard only covering half the screen when writing text messages

When I hold the phone in portrait to write a text message the keyboard is normal size. When I tip the phone to landscape, the keyboard only covers about half the screen. This means I can only write message when holding the phone in portrait. I have tried shutting down and restarting the phone, but the issue is not resolved.
