Pros and Cons of changing the email associated with Xbox

Currently, my Xbox email is also my email for the MS Office, Skype, and many other MS services. Xbox s console is also used by other members in the house. My personal/professional email messages popping up on Xbox, even getting skype messages/call and all is visible if I forgot to sign out.

So, the question is, is it easy to change the email id (not GT, only email ID). Would I lose anything - points, achievements, Xbox Live Gold, and other premium services associated with current email? Is it easy switch?

How to gift digital Xbox One games over Xbox Live

Digital game gifting is finally available on Xbox One, allowing any game to be sent over Xbox Live. Here's how it works on the console.
Continuing to expand the Xbox One's digital ecosystem, a recent update to the console added the ability to gift games directly through its online marketplace. While previously, gifting digital games proved to be challenging via third-party retailers, game gifting integrates this as a native feature of Xbox Live.

Used Icon - 30 day Return

Hey all,
Got a question hoping some might counsel me on.

I just purchased on Ebay a used Icon which works really well except that it get hot at the bottom, particularly in the bottom right corner. I found sites where others experienced this same issue.

is this normal for ALL icons?

Should I return it and try buying another? I want to move my wife because of the savings vs buying an iPhone 6 and we're totally in the windows eco.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Paint.NET is now available in the Windows Store for all Windows 10 PCs

Legendary old school drawing app Paint.NET arrives in the Windows Store through Microsoft's Desktop Bridge.
Back in late June, we reported that Ricker Brewster – the current caretaker and developer behind Paint.NET, which first launched in 2004 – was going to put into the Windows Store using Microsoft's win32 conversion system "Project Centennial." Just a few months later (due to some travel and other business) the app is finally here.
Paint.NET is now ready to download to any Windows 10 PC with a free trial option (spotted by Aggiornamenti Lumia). There is also a discounted price of $5.99 for the app, which is a saving from the regular $8.99 price tag. That sale runs through all of October. The price is thought more of as a donation to support the app's continued development although users can use the app with the free trial method instead.

OneDrive and Windows Store/Updates outage in wifi network

Hello!

It looks like some new issue because there is new thread in Microsoft support with more and more people reporting this.

OneDrive, Dropbox, Creative Cloud (Adobe) and Mail app, Skype, Windows Store and Update is not connecting to the network only in affected wifi network. Web browsers are working like always.

I'm sure it's source might be on Microsoft side or in router because it affects all Windows PC/laptops in one wifi network, everything works fine just when you connect to different wifi (from smartphone for example) or sometimes for few minutes after router is reset or when I change router DNS.

Store gives 0x800704cf error, same for Windows Update, OneDrive sometimes shows 0x8004de40 and that is how I got to thread where more and more people are reporting this: http://ift.tt/2yeBODx

Is there any hope for us? :( What could be wrong, maybe MS is just limiting our services somehow but why router might be a target? I have to say that all my content is legal and from decent sources (Netflix, YouTube, Showmax), all software is legit + OneDrive is premium.

BTW: Europe, Poland but I see that people from different countries are affected.

Possible retrenchment from MS

As stated so many times I like Windows and Windows Phone, my personal set up is a 950XL with dock, Surface Pro 4 with dock and this is my tablet/laptop/desktop, an Xbox One as the base for my entertainment system.

I subscribe to Office 365, Xbox Live, Groove, Skype number and subs.

Similar setups for my wife and family

I do plan on buying the Xbox One X maybe just after the holidays. The main reason being 4K, I want to be able to watch 4k through the Xbox One (Netflix etc.) and improved games graphics.

But then I cannot help but see a period of retrenchment from Microsoft products and services for me, this may not come into effect until midway into 2018 as my setup and my 950XL is currently working OK, but come next year I will probably have to jump ship on the phone front.

If I do this, I know I can get MS products, software and services on Android or Mac systems (Already doing this on my work Samsung).

But why on earth would I continue to give MS money for services when the competition is often better, certainly fleeter of foot when it comes to newer ideas. And more importantly integrated to the ecosystem. I currently use Groove because it is an MS product on MS/Windows devices and certainly not because it is the best music player out there. The same would go for most of the stuff I use.

Anyone else planning a period of retrenchment from MS products and services unless MS manage to get their finger out and fast?

My Third XBOX Elite Controller

Dan,

I am 52 years old and currently on my "THIRD" Elite Controller. Lucky for me I bought it at Best Buy with the extended warranty. I don't like to return a perfectly good controller, but I also paid for the service, so I am going to use it.

Since it's difficult to communicate up the Microsoft food chain via standard means perhaps you can assist. I don't abuse the controller, but I do use it on a regular basis. All my other XBOX controllers function perfectly with the exception of my most expensive one.

The rubber handles always split at the seams and start peeling away due to a poor application of whatever adhesive Microsoft is applying at the factory. I know there are a large number of Elite Controller user's having the same issue, and I was hoping we could use Windows Central to escalate the issue to Microsoft.

The downside for many others is they can't return the controllers since it usually happens outside of the warranty window in most cases. Can you help get Microsoft's attention to this issue? I personally love the Elite Controller, but this one defect keeps popping its ugly head up over and over.

Please help!

What's the "What's new" in Contacts all about?

I have a Lumia 950 with Windows 10 Mobile, the Anniversary Update installed. In the Contacts/People app it used to give me things like their updates on Facebook and some on Twitter. (Not many of the people I have a family or friends are on Twitter. :( )

However, when I go into the People app on my phone now, nothing is under the "What's new" tab/page. All it says is, "No news to share right now". It's been that way for a while.

So, is this functionality deprecated or do I need to do something else in order to enable this functionality?

Mixed Reality/VR/AR - the reason MSFT needs to be in Mobile

With the AR kit and how much iPhone is showing promise, I realized MSFT needs to make a Surface Phone so it could also fulfill the promise of AR/VR, which i think can be the next big wave in computing next to smartphones.

This also makes me wonder if their mixed reality event this October has a Surface phone...

I recently started using a 640XL instead of the 830 I've had for a couple of years. Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update Invert Color Filter - A Strange Alternative to a White Accent Color

Hey there,

I just watched Zac Bowden's walkthrough of the Windows 10 Fall Creator's update hoping I could find an answer to this concept screenshot:

FluentTaskbar.png

This "white accent color" on the taskbar is something that Windows 10 users have been requesting for years with no possible solution. That is, until this concept screenshot above emerged for less than two seconds in the Fluent Design System concept video.

Apparently, Microsoft went for a strange solution to this request. Instead of giving the users the option to select #FFFFFF as an accent color, they seem to have added it as an "Invert" color filter in the ease of access settings panel (as per Zac's video).

FluentInvertTaskbar.png

As you can see, this color filter produces an undesired effect: the colors on Daniel Rubino's pinned MyPeople face have been inverted (lower right corner). This induced effect is unnatural for those who desire just a white accent color.

So, I guess it is back to the drawing board for the white accent color concept. Or, there could be a workaround. Who knows?

If Microsoft is the 'platform for everything,' does it really need a phone?

Before smartphones, Windows was the platform for virtually all personal computing.
In a multi-device, multi-OS world, Microsoft is now positioning the cloud, Microsoft Graph, Windows Mixed Reality and quantum computing as the platforms that all other platforms will run on. In simpler times, personal computing, to most people and businesses, meant sitting at a Windows PC using first- and third-party programs to get things done or to be entertained. Other desktop OSes offered little competition to Microsoft's Windows.

Smartphones, the mobile OSes they would popularize, and the app ecosystems they would introduce hadn't yet challenged Microsoft's personal computing hegemony. And the internet, which would become the backbone that would power the mobile OSes that would rival Windows PCs as the nexus of personal computing, had not yet been mainstreamed.
The world was smaller, and the realm of personal computing was Windows - until it wasn't. Many people argue that Microsoft needs a mobile presence to become relevant in the age of mobile computing. Perhaps it does, and there is indeed a place for that. But the company's ambitious cloud and Microsoft Graph platform strategy, which is meant to support the breadth of the industry's apps, systems and devices, is a far grander prize.

Put another way, if you own the ocean, do you really need a boat?

I'm a relatively new Windows/Surface convert, and before I switched from Mac to Windows, I'd been using macOS for years. I'm also a big keyboard shortcut and gesture guy, meaning I actually take the time to learn and remember as many shortcuts and gestures in the OS I'm using as possible, because they genuinely help me get more work done faster.

Before making the switch from Mac to Windows, I'd been using Apple's Magic Trackpad 2 in place of a mouse. And I'd really become used to using gestures and swiping up and down, left and right, to scroll. So when I bought my new Surface Pro, I immediately noticed that Microsoft doesn't offer any sort of external trackpad for it, even though Windows supports a number of gestures. For example, when I use my Surface Pro along with my Signature Type Cover, I can swipe up and down with two fingers to scroll, and swipe up and down with three digits to show or hide the desktop.

It seems odd that Microsoft wouldn't have released some sort of Surface trackpad to utilize the various gestures built into Windows. What do you think? Why hasn't Microsoft released one? And do you know of any third-party trackpads that you recommend?

Cuphead Xbox One review: A work of art, an acquired taste

Cuphead is launching soon, and after several years in development since the game's announcement, you have to wonder if it's worth all of the hype – well, it is.
Cuphead is a true work of art. Hand-painted backdrops, frame-by-frame hand-drawn sprites, with some of the most imaginative, whimsical, and wacky boss battles ever seen in gaming.
Cuphead is a side-scrolling shooter which pays homage to several classic design principles, across both art and gaming. Contra-style directional shooting, schmup bullet-hell levels, and vaudevillian art coalesces to create a game that assaults your eyes and your brain, with its sheer beauty and diabolical difficulty.
As a game, Cuphead certainly won't appeal to everyone, but it's a shining beacon of creativity in its purest form that ought to be celebrated by gamers everywhere. Here's our Cuphead review.

Has the W10m WC app been abandoned?

It's been crashy, it has limited functionality and flaky forums, and yet we all buy it and put up with it. A while back your web site decided to block logins through the app (as highlighted in the app feedback forum here, yes there is one, scroll down about as far as you can go, way beneath the forum for WinRT...) but I didn't notice as I already had it logged in. I eventually get round to reinstalling it to stem the tide of crashes (absolutely no other app does this...) and I now find I'm forced to go to the ad-mess that is the WC site to try to post anything as logins through the app are now barred.

Any chance you could appeal to the powers that be to let us remaining W10m users who have bought your app to be allowed to log in again? I know we're an outspoken lot, but a blanket ban like this is a bit over the top.

What if we promise to behave from now on and offer to make a thread of pictures of Windows Phone fans kissing Android phones whilst enjoying Android's amazingly innovative UI and their secure, adware free fantastic store apps? We're sorry. Please lift the W10m ban and let us in again.

The latest build, 16299, released on Tuesday, September 26, is turning out to be very stable, fast, and seemingly dependable.

Outlook won't sync when not connected to wifi

But when on cellular it does not sync either automatically or manually. When I press the sync button it tries t sync and just returns "last updated x hours ago"

Is anyone else having this issue?
Does anyone know a fix?

Everything you need to know before buying an external hard drive

Using an external hard drive is an affordable way to back up data on your PC and keep it safe from system crashes and other potential problems. Here's everything you need to know when looking to buy one.
Storing absolutely everything on your PC can be handy if you have space to accommodate it all, but even if you don't slow your Windows installation down to a halt, you'll be running the risk of losing everything stored on the PC if you do not backup. The easiest (and most affordable) way of backing things up on your PC and hosting media files on the go is an external hard drive. This can come in the form of a traditional mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or a new Solid State Drive (SSD).
The choice may appear to be straightforward but there are a number of things you should consider before buying an external drive.

Spice up your Windows 10 Start Menu with Pin More

Pin More lets you create custom tiles for games, folders, documents, and websites. These fit right in and look as good as many native UWP app's tiles, and better than some of the poorer tiles.
The app does more than just create squares and rectangles that link to your content, it can search through sites or certain games for information to display on the tiles. It then creates a little redirecting app to pin to your Start Menu — it's essentially an app to launch another app.

Xbox One S vs. Xbox One X: Specs, differences, and should you upgrade?

If you're an Xbox fan looking to upgrade your old 2013 Xbox One, or even old-school Xbox 360, there are two main console options for you to consider this holiday.
The Xbox One S launched in 2016, with all-new 4K capabilities, including UHD Blu-ray and support for 4K media streaming, including Netflix. At the same event, the Xbox One X was announced, built to power 4K media, Blu-ray, and games, wrapped in the smallest Xbox console ever made.
At face value, the primary differences are price and power. The Xbox One S can be purchased for around $249, whereas the Xbox One X clocks in at $499. The Xbox One S is only slightly more powerful than the Xbox One of 2013, outputting games at around 1080p. The Xbox One X is far, far more powerful, outputting games at full 4K with enhanced textures, visuals, and other effects.
Still, there are many other nuances to consider when examining the differences between the two, and we'll go through and work out which might be best for you.
