Huge batttery life improvements

Since the latest insider came out, my Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (2015) has been averaging around 8-10 hours per day. I kid you not here are my settings:

Brightness between 60-90%, Wifi not connected, bluetooth on, using built-in LTE modem via tmobile.

Last week I was only getting 4-5 hours at most. Not sure what is going on but pretty stoked.

Will the Windows Central website and apps be updated to PWA?

Hello,

Question is above. ^

I love the Twitter PWA and see the potential that PWA has, so I think the Windows Central apps could also use the PWA love.

Windows store PWAs for windows 10 mobile?

So just out of curiousity, I went to check out the new PWA based twitter app on my windows 10 mobile. Obviously notifications wouldn't work because it doesn't have the service, and it won't work offline (because it doesn't have the service), but it did seem to load, without the edge browser UI on my phone (ie in an app-like fashion).

Which if we get a lot more PWAs over time, does kinda seem like a plus. I didn't log in, but it's definately the same web app.

Kinda a shame there is no service for notifications. Otherwise this would be the perfect bridge between win10m and andromeda....(obviously some people won't want a foldable tablet/phone hybrid, or be able to afford it, but by the time I want to upgrade my phone, which will be ages away, I am sure I will)

what's the best laptop for music production in 2018

I am a beginner in music production. I am looking to buy a music production laptop. i will be using pro tools and i am in the trying phase. after research here are my min specifications
i7
8GB+ RAM
500 GB SSD
2.5 GHZ MIN
A thunderbolt connection but not a must

I saw techradar recommendations but seem not to explain why they picked the laptop. i also came across studio gear experts and are recommending 2 laptops that will be released this month, both of them have 6-core and are 8th generation processor.

I am looking to spend around $1500 but dont want to mess. here are the 2 laptops i am thinking off. https://ift.tt/2KpZt6V

my worry is despite these 2 having good specs they are pretty new. my 3rd option if not the 2 is zenbook pro but its a 4-core machine . and dell xps 13 2018 version

i would love if anyone can share their insights about my choices

Surface Laptop w/ Intel Core M3 & Windows 10 Pro

I just bought a 2017 Surface Laptop with and intel core m3-7Y30. It obviously came with windows 10 s, and I have the option to upgrade to windows 10 pro.

I like how fast the machine runs with windows 10 s, but I'd like to be able to download Google Chrome and other applications.

So heres my question - can this laptop run windows 10 pro efficiently? Or if I upgrade will it dramatically reduce how fast the computer is?

I'm also not sure if there is a way to go back to windows 10 s if I upgrade to pro, so I want to make sure its a good decision.

Thank you!

Hello,

Texture is an all-access pass to the world's best magazines. To keep things working smoothly, older versions of the app sometimes need to be retired. You still have full access to Texture for iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire devices. You'll find additional features on these platforms such as bookmarking, featured stories, search, and more.

SurfaceBook will not go to sleep properly

I am on the latest build for insiders and ever since they release the first RTM build for the spring update my SB has been crap. Every morning when I dock my SB it is dead, battery is completely drained. On top of that after it has been restarted while docked and then undocked and re-docked again the USB connect keyboard and mouse no longer work. The only way to bring them back is to reboot the SB which is ridiculous.
I have played around with the power settings but that doesnt seem to change anything, I currently have it set to go to sleep after 5 when on battery and 10 when plugged in.

Im almost at my wits end and about to do a clean install but i wanted to put this out here to see if anyone has experienced this as well and hopefully has a solution to this.

Thanks.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update common problems and fixes

If you're having problems upgrading to the April 2018 Update, in this guide, we'll highlight the most common issues and the steps to resolve them.
The Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) has finally arrived, and it's rolling out worldwide as a free update for compatible desktops, laptops, and tablets. The new version is the fifth major refresh that Microsoft is releasing (the first of two updates coming out this year), and it delivers a new set of features and changes to improve productivity, performance, and security.
However, a new release also means new potential problems because feature updates are not the same as those quality updates you get every month. Instead, every new release of Windows 10 goes through significant code restructuring which can introduce compatibility issues as well as bugs that can negatively impact the experience.
Alongside the issues that may appear as a result of the new version, you may also come across problems that aren't necessarily problems with the new feature update. Sometimes, an installation could fail because of outdated drivers, conflicts with programs, and configurations you may have applied that will prevent installing the new version.

How to get the Windows 10 April 2018 Update as soon as possible

Windows 10's April 2018 Update is now generally available, and these are steps to get it as soon as possible.
Providing nothing goes wrong, Microsoft is officially beginning the rollout of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) on April 30, 2018. This is the fifth major release for compatible devices with new features and changes to improve security, privacy, performance, and productivity.
In version 1803, you'll find new features like Timeline, Nearby Sharing, and Graphics settings. Windows 10 continues the gradual rollout of Fluent Design in the Start menu, taskbar, Settings, and throughout the experience. Users get more control over their privacy, such as options to view and delete telemetry data and deny file access to apps. The Settings app receives a lot of tweaks, including a new section to manage fonts, Microsoft Edge gets updated, and a lot more.
As usual, Microsoft is expected to push the new version gradually, meaning that the feature update won't be available on every PC on day one. On April 30, the update will be available for those who want to get it manually, and then on May 8, it'll start rolling out through Windows Update. However, bear in mind that some devices may take up to several months before they get it automatically. However, if you don't want to wait, there's more than one way to force the April 2018 Update onto your computer.

Transplanting Gear VR Lenses into a HTC Vive

I've recently stumbled across the fact that there are more than a few people reporting to have successfully transplanted Gear VR (2016 or 2017 model - not the white version) into the HTC vive with exceptional results!

They say and back it up with videos that the sweet spot is much bigger, the god rays are reduced and that overall the picture is much clearer.

There' some editing of setup files that need to be done to correct some barrel distortion that is introduced as a result but it all sounds pretty straightforward. There's lots of tutorials on youtube about it.

I've decided to try it and just ordered a pair of adapters from a local 3D Printing service for $30 and bought a 2016 gear VR for $29. It should all come together in about 2 weeks or so!

Here's the link to the adapter files from thingiverse - the comments are a great resource for links to everything you need including the tutorials and software.

Has anyone else done this or thinking about trying it?

Gains & Losses - My Take On Lenovo's 2018 Yoga Lineup

The full specs for Lenovo's new 2018 Yoga lineup have been released. In this thread, I will talk about what features are gained and lost from their 2017 models. I will start with the lowest priced models and work up from there.

Flex Series (Yoga 500 Series outside U.S.):

Lenovo Flex 6 (Yoga 530) 11":
https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptop.../p/88IP8FX0889

flex-6-11-gallery.jpg

  • What is gained: a new 11" Yoga 500 series 2-in-1. Has extremely large bezels, Intel® Celeron® N4000 or Intel® Pentium® Silver N5000 processors (no Intel Core processors), 11.6" HD (1366 x 768) touchscreen, Intel® UHD Graphics 605 graphics, 4GB RAM (ouch), 128 GB eMMC storage (ouch again), 6 hour battery, HD webcam, USB-A 3.0 & 2.0 ports (why 2.0?), USB Type-C (DP & USB 3.0), HDMI, full-size SD card reader, combo headphone/microphone jack, starting at 2.6 lbs (1.25 kg).
  • What is lost: the ability to run Windows 10 (basically). :unhappysweat:

Lenovo Flex 6 (Yoga 530) 14":
https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptop.../p/88IP8FX0980

flex6-14-feature-3.jpg

  • What is gained: A new chassis design with considerably slimmer bezels (especially the top bezel). Lenovo Swift Charge technology (a new name for a wall-wart?)
  • What is lost: Intel Core i7 & 16GB RAM configuration (max Intel Core i5 & 8GB configuration at the moment). Discrete graphics. Fingerprint reader. Max dual storage configuration (1TB 5400RPM & 128GB SSD) replaced with single 256 GB SSD. The ability to play Forza Horizon 3 (why do the screenshots even show this? False advertising. :eck: )

What is also lost: 15" Yoga 500 series 2-in-1.

Yoga 700 Series:

Another unit lost: 12" Yoga 700 Series 2-in-1.

Yoga 730 13":
https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptop.../p/88YG7000964

lenovo-laptop-yoga-730-13-3.jpg

  • What is gained: A new thinner and lighter chassis design (starting at 0.28 lbs lighter). 1 hour extra estimated battery life (from 10.5 hours to 11.5 hours).
  • What is lost: UHD (3840 x 2160) screen configuration. 1TB SSD configuration (max 512GB).

Yoga 730 15":
https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptop.../p/88YG7000965

resized-images-for-yoga-730-15-gallery-2.jpg

  • What is gained: A new and considerably thinner and lighter chassis design (starting at 1.78 lbs lighter). An extra hour in estimated battery life (from 8 to 9 hours or from 10 to 11 hours). An Nvidia GTX 1050 4GB graphics card (rather than a 1050 2GB card).
  • What is lost: Intel Core i5/i7 HQ Processors (until now, the 700 series 15" was on par with the Dell XPS 15. I guess Lenovo didn't jump on the Intel Core G w/ Radeon Vega graphics train). Instead, the 700 series 15" has 8th gen Intel Core i5/i7 U processors.

No updates to the Yoga 900 series yet.

In my opinion, some of these updates make the 2017 models look better. The only consistent update to every model was a thinner and lighter chassis, and even that's stretching it with the chunky Flex 6 11" model.

What do you think of my findings? Do you agree with my opinion on these updates? Would you have liked to see something else that I didn't touch upon? Please voice your opinion below.

Looking for DISM commands for the Windows Recovery Tool

Hello,

So after using Windows 10 Background Changer, I am now running into a black flickering screen on the login screen, I tried:

- using chkdsk command from the W. Recovery tool since I can't login. OK

- using SFC /scannow offbootdir & offwindir command. The files are found but can't be repaired.

- after reading the article on the DISM comands and trying them, it seems to be that the example shown are only in a session.

My question is: Can I adapt the DISM commands to repair my image From the Windows Recovery Tool ?

Thank you for your time.

Surface Book 2 i7 slower than Surface Pro i5??

Hello,

I am in the market for a new laptop, I have bought a Surface Book 2 i7 (8th gen) with 8GB RAM and GTX1050 and a Surface Pro i5 (7th gen) with 8 GB RAM so I can test both and return one of them.

Probably the most intense apps that I use on a daily basis are Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I have run several tests like open a bunch of high-res images and processing them on Photoshop and every single time the Surface Pro finished faster. (By a quite big margin).

On other tests, like opening dozens of PHP files on Dreamweaver, and duplicating large files (to test SSD speed) the Surface Pro also had a clerar advantage over the SB2.

Does it make sense? The SB2 is about $900 more expensive and has better specs, also Microsoft promotes it as "Powerhouse performance" but I am not seeing a performance improvement over than on paper (and supposedly) slower machine.

I think the SB2 is an overall better machine with a better design and which probably fits better on my lifestyle, but I am surprised of those differences so I am questioning myself if is it worth spending such difference basing the purchase factor on the design and not on the performance.

What do you guys think? Probably my SB2 does not work well?

Chime in: Is it okay to game on your laptop while plugged in?

There are various myths, recommendations, and claims out there when it comes to laptop batteries, but does it matter when you keep it plugged in for gaming?
It's generally recommended to keep your laptop battery charged somewhere between 40 and 80 percent, as well as keeping the laptop as cool as possible. But when it comes to gaming, there's no workaround for keeping the unit powered and enjoying a few hours of entertainment. You need that constant flow of power, but does this have a negative effect on the battery?

What's in store for Windows Store?

Windows Central has spilled a lot of digital ink on the subject of Windows Store (does anyone call it Microsoft Store?). Some of the stories are realistic but many look to a bright future.

The one Windows Store app that I _actually_ use recently announced that it soon will be pulled from Windows store.

It's called "Uitzending Gemist" (only available in the Dutch store) and is an app that gives access to public Dutch TV. The public organization in charge of providing on-line access to these TV programs has decided to end support for Windows Phone and for Android versions 4.2 and earlier.

I'm guessing that they've looked at usage statistics and likely found that the Windows app simply isn't being used in large numbers relative to the Android and iOS versions. This is despite the fact that it runs (well) on Windows 10 desktop and is a decent app as far as apps go (it's essentially a port of the iOS app which means it's decent quality).

If Windows Store can't provide enough users in a country in which Mac penetration rates are lower than in English speaking North America then what's the future for Windows Store?

Entry-level SB2 worth it?

I'm in the market for a new laptop and an heavily considering a Surface device. Build quality, looks and, hopefully, durability. Also great screens.

I don't do anything crazy with it. Work (browser based), email, Spotify, calendar and a bunch of tabs open. Watch videos (local and streaming). I don't really need the whole pen thing, but I love the "on the couch" form factor of the SP tablet.

I was going to get a SP5, but the entire line seems to suffer from lightbleed issues. Haven't seen a single good one yet.

Then someone told me... For the price of the SP i5/8Gig and the type cover you might as well get a SB2. Better build quality, longer battery, etc.

What do you guys think? Or should I just get a Surface Laptop?

How Much is Riding on Andromeda?

I'm just wondering how much is riding on andromeda from a consumer perspective, and what your thoughts are. Since MS killed W10M to try and leapfrog current mobile phones I think it better be a homerun or MS may just go drop the consumer side and be a backend cloud/enterprise software company.

What happens if Andromeda is a flop, how many more stabs is MS going to take at consumer? The gap just keeps getting wider and more difficult to close.

BattleTech for PC review: A fantastic game buried beneath a blanket of bugs

BattleTech for PC has strong gameplay and a surprisingly impressive story, but it is held back by numerous performance flaws.
BattleTech is one of the oldest franchises in gaming, with its roots in the original BattleTech tabletop role-playing game (RPG). Titles like MechWarrior and MechAssault have adapted the universe to the shooter genres, but none of the franchise's video games have been similar to the tabletop version. With the latest game on PC, BattleTech, that changes.
Featuring turn-based, tactical gameplay, and a strong narrative, BattleTech ticks all the boxes for it to be a strong addition to the franchise it shares a name with. However, it's plagued with performance problems, and getting the game to run smoothly is impossible.

There's no excuse for Microsoft not making an 'Xboy' to rival Nintendo Switch

Microsoft is blowing it by not having a handheld gaming strategy. This is why.

I finally broke down and bought a Nintendo Switch. I had been eyeing the handheld gaming system for some time. The constant stream of new game announcements, including surprises like DOOM, was too much to resist. Could it really be that fun?
A week later, and I now consider myself a part of the Switch cult, an evangelist of the giant, clunky device that I now feel is as important as my smartphone.
So why hasn't Microsoft ever made a handheld gaming console? It should. It's not too late, and the company is leaving money on the table if it doesn't.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update review: It's about the little things

The next Windows 10 feature update is here, and it's packing lots of new changes and refinements. Here's our full review!
Starting next week, Microsoft will begin rolling out a brand new feature update for Windows 10. Dubbed the "April 2018 Update," (or Version 1803 for short,) this release is the fifth major feature update to Windows 10 since its original debut in July 2015. Microsoft has committed to releasing two feature updates every year, and Version 1803 is the first for 2018. This release brings with it new features and refinements, but unlike previous releases, this one focuses more on the refinements and less on the new features.
While that may sound like a bad thing on the outside, this makes for a far more 'well-rounded' release that's one of the better Windows 10 updates as of late. There aren't so many new blockbuster features shouting in your face; instead, Microsoft has focused on continuing to modernize the OS, make things work better, and improve on things that were broken or redundant.
So, without further ado. This is our full Windows 10 April Update review.

Easiest way to fix KB(XXXXXXX) Windows Update install errors.

Recently I came across an KB Update issue that failed to install (KB4093105) via Windows Update.

After a quick search on the internet I found silly solutions suchas a complete clean insta;; of the entire o/s just to install this update. The reason why people suggest this time consuming method is that this particular update if it doesn't install prevents any further updates being delivered through windows update.

The reason why I say it is silly because are you really going to re-install the entire operating system for a KB update issue?

To compound matters, some people will probably have older versions of Windows 10 and to "save time", they may use that but... to get upto Build 1709 (fall creators update) you need install a ton of updates (at the time of this post that is the lastest build pushed through Windows Update).

So you'll end up downloading the updated iso from Microsoft and then creating a bootable USB, reinstalling and then setting up everything again. It's just time consuming.

Some suggested rebooting the PC / Laptop etc - the old adage of "have you tried turning it off and on again" from IT support... doesn't always work .

However there are two easy options:

  1. Wait for Microsoft to fix the problem (which depending on the issue can take some time)
  2. Download the KB updates from: www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/

Many people don't realise you can download updates directly from Microsoft without Windows Update either that or they've forgotten that you could do so since the days of Windows XP.

On the top right hand corner of the catalog.update page you can search for the particular KB update your require. Some of these updates are fairly large at 700 Megs, so you will need a decent connection or a download manager if you have a slow and unreliable connection or have monthly bandwidth limitations.

[Screenshots to follow]

In 90% of cases the updates downloaded from catalog.update.microsoft.com will install without issues. The 10% well... is far beyond the scope of this simple how to guide :grincry:.
