I've recently stumbled across the fact that there are more than a few people reporting to have successfully transplanted Gear VR (2016 or 2017 model - not the white version) into the HTC vive with exceptional results!
They say and back it up with videos that the sweet spot is much bigger, the god rays are reduced and that overall the picture is much clearer.
There' some editing of setup files that need to be done to correct some barrel distortion that is introduced as a result but it all sounds pretty straightforward. There's lots of tutorials on youtube about it.
I've decided to try it and just ordered a pair of adapters from a local 3D Printing service for $30 and bought a 2016 gear VR for $29. It should all come together in about 2 weeks or so!
Here's the link to the adapter files from thingiverse - the comments are a great resource for links to everything you need including the tutorials and software.
Has anyone else done this or thinking about trying it?
