Need help with text syncing from phone upgrade

I recently acquired a Lumia 950 to replace my L920 with.

Now i've been trying to set it up how I want, getting it updated, etc, and trying to maintain a fairly light experience. While i've been playing around with either loading a backup of my L920, or just going in vanilla, I've had issues with text syncing. I've noticed that my texts all sync to the L950 right up until I got it, i.e. 29th of May (last Monday). Because I was having some issues, I have still been using my L920, while I get things right on the L950.

Thing is, all the texts since Monday won't load, and it's annoying because I have been making a few. They're still on my old phone (the L920) and I've been trying to get them to sync across with forced backups and whatever, but nothing seems to be working.

Anyone know what I have to do?

Next Steps for MS on Android (maybe iOS too)

Having recently made the switch to Android (not exactly thrilled, but I do have functioning apps I need now), I am seeing that MS has done a lot for users on Android. Obviously, they brought Office over. They've added the Arrow Launcher, lock screen and other apps. IMO, they need to step it up a notch and compete the experience.

While they cant realistically replace the Play Store, they could do a lot to make life better for users coming from WP, or for those who just don't want to be all Google.

Contacts - Syncing Outlook.com contacts is a mess. What's the feasibility of porting People over from WP? Can it be made to integrate at a system level in Android?

Calendar - For some reason, I cant get Cortana to work with my Outlook.com calendar. Make Cortana work with Outlook if its installed instead of the system calendar, which doesn't seem, to like Outlook.com. Or make outlook.com work with the Android/Gmail system calendar.

Photos - yes, I can install One Drive and backup my photos, but to see photos from One Drive that aren't local, I have to open the One Drive app. MS needs to make a Photos app for Android that automatically integrates local photos with One Drive, maybe even Google Photos too. Allow me to make this the default picker for sharing pictures, etc system wide.

Music/Groove - For some reason, Groove on Android cannot play local files as the system default audio player. (unless I'm doing it wrong somehow) It only can play local audio that has been downloaded by Groove. This means if I want to play music off my SD card, I have to use Google Music or VLC or something else. Then, when I want to play music from my Groove pass, I have to open Groove.

Video - I have actually used Movies and TV to rent and buy movies a few times. It would be nice to have access to that content on Android too.

One Drive/Files - for an extra bonus, make the One Drive app also the system file browser so One Drive feels more like a seamless extension of the OS.

So, maybe this stuff is all obvious, but if MS isn't really going to me a mobile option, it would be nice if they took the Android integration of their services a step further and made them feel more native.

Surface cover with bluetooth or wireless

I've been using a surface 3 for a couple of years now and I've come to realise that there's something that is missing

When I want to type, I'll use the surface cover that came with the surface 3 -the keyboard is mostly okay but it has to be attached for it to work

Why can't the surface cover/keyboard work when it's not connected to the surface 3?

Say for example I'm using Instagram and I use it in portrait mode - and I want to comment something - I have to attach the keyboard back, turn it around, type my comment, and then remove it and go back to using in portrait mode
It would make a lot more sense for us to be able to use the keyboard attached or not attached

I'm not sure which technology would be used though - maybe Bluetooth or wireless

Does a Bluetooth keyboard need batteries? Or a wireless one?

What do you think?

Seeing Microsoft's mobile future requires big-picture perspective

Does Microsoft have a mobile strategy? Yes, but to see it you must look beyond the yearly cycle governing the smartphone industry.
I've often contemplated how artists who create large works, like the 60-foot sculptures of Mount Rushmore, maintain perspective. As they work on the details of the piece, they're far too close to (essentially engulfed by) the enormous "canvas" to see how each detail relates to the larger whole. It's a very different perspective than a sketchpad drawing where the entire picture is always in view.

How to tell if your mini PC supports 4K — and why that matters

Most mini PCs support 4K these days.
The technology to enable true 4K has been around for years, but as is often the case, it takes a while for the tech to filter through and become more affordable. That's where we're at right now.
Today, 4K TVs are common and so are 4K PC monitors, and we're getting more and more ultra HD (UHD) content to use with these displays. But a display isn't any use without something to actually push that 4K content to it. Thankfully, that doesn't require a high-end gaming PC.
There's a pretty wide range of PCs that can push 4K video output, from the very big to the very small. And in the case of a mini PC, you're looking at a good option for a living-room-based Home Theater PC (HTPC).

How can I get an "economical" Windows 10 Key for a budget (aka: Free) computer?

Hello!

I've cobbled together a bunch of my spare parts into a perfectly good, functioning PC for a relative and the only remaining component is a Windows 10 key. $140 CAD seems like a rediculous amount to spend considering that is more than all the parts are even worth.

A) Will Windows 10S be offered for sale "cheaper" than 10 Home?
B) Without using one of the nefarious key sites ($25 seems too good to be true) is there any legit way to get Windows at a discount?
C) Do you have any Windows keys lying around the office?

Microsoft Reportedly Testing New Phone With New Windows Mobile OS

You may be wondering what happened to Microsoft's ambitions in the mobile space. The company has been creating a lot of hardware lately, but it's focused on its Surface-branded line of devices running 'full' Windows. A new Windows Mobile handset hasn't been in the rumors for quite some time now.

That changes today, because a new unconfirmed report now claims that Microsoft is testing just such a device. The revelation apparently comes from two different sources inside the company, so it may be accurate. The bad news? The phone is said to be running a "different" branch of Windows Mobile.

This has a UI that is different from what we're used to seeing in Windows 10 Mobile, but it's not set in stone yet because it's still "early days" for the development of this new interface. Yes, you read that correctly. Once again, Microsoft may be looking to "reinvent" the mobile experience, in yet another desperate attempt to set its OS apart from its rivals.

And yes, this could in fact mean a new 'cut' in support for older Windows Mobile apps, which aren't going to work with this new UI. Silverlight apps in particular seem doomed.

Even if all of this is true now, keep in mind that plans change, and they may be altered significantly in the coming months, before that phone that's currently in testing sees the light of day. Speaking of which, it's very unclear when the new handset might become available - it could be as much as a year from now, or "less if it receives good reviews internally and gets fast tracked".

How to change Windows 10's Game DVR Captures folder location

You can change the Windows 10 Game DVR feature's Captures folder location to avoid running out of space on your system drive. Here's how.

On Windows 10, Game DVR is a feature that allows you to quickly and easily capture the best moments in your games by recording clips and taking screenshots, which you can then share on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks.
The only caveat is that by default Game DVR saves all your screenshots and clips in the Captures folder inside Videos in your account, and Windows 10 doesn't include an option in Settings, or in the Xbox app, to change this default location.
If you rarely play games on your PC, you probably don't need to worry, but gamers who often record clips will notice that their system drives will fill up quickly, especially people who run Windows 10 on a Solid-State Drive (SSD), which are quite fast but also expensive and limited on capacity.
Fortunately, it's possible to change and move the content of the Captures folder to another location to prevent running out of space on your primary system drive using this simple workaround.

Falling in Love again...

Hello all,

I made the journey from BB10 to Windows in 2014. My Z10's battery life had become unusable and I debated between replacing it with a Z30 or the Lumia Icon. I just loved everything about the Icon and had always been curious about giving Windows a try, so the Icon won out. On top of that, I was also concerned about the future support for BB10 which also played a part in my decision to switch.

After some initial growing pains, I fell in love with Windows 8 and 8.1. My Icon quickly became my favorite phone ever owned and I went all in with Microsoft, buying a Band 2 and replacing my Android tablet with a Windows tablet. Then Windows 10 rolled out, killed the battery life and fluidity on my Icon, and I ultimately jumped back to BB (sort of) with the Priv.

Have owned the Priv now for a year and a half and the access to all the apps on Android has been great. My wife recently broke her phone, so while waiting for a replacement, we swapped and she's using my Priv while I fired up my Icon again. Have been using the Icon for the past week....yes, I miss some of the apps I had on the Priv, but I'd forgotten how much of a joy the Windows Mobile UI is to use. I've kept my Icon updated to track the progress of Windows 10, but this is my first time using my Icon as a daily driver in well over a year. The things that scared me off initially...bad battery life, glitches, reboots, etc, all no longer seem to be present. On the other hand, my Priv would reboot DAILY, sometimes multiple times a day. While the Priv is a great device, it's well known that it gets hot and sluggish when doing certain task. So now its got me wondering, do I go back to my Priv in a couple of days or stay with my Icon? Never thought this would be even a thought, I have the same concerns today about the future of Windows Mobile as is I had about BB10, but for the moment my Icon and Windows 10 have won over my heart again.

Thanks for reading my rambling ☺

I know it's an integral part of Windows but is it going to have the same issue or because it's integrated, there won't be any problems and it'll work just like on any other W10?

And is there a chance for Dropbox to find somehow a way how to deliver the same experience? Or is it really without a chance?

What's the maximum potential of the Surface Laptop?

I know the specs are pretty good but NOT THAT big to call it a 'beast' and what not, but how would it stand in the hands of a user who might some day have to render stuff and at the same time like the occasional gaming (light of course)?

Would it run well in the long run? I'm asking this because my Dell Inspiron 15 (3rd) with an i5, 4GB, 1 GB (graphics) does a pretty decent job; unfortunately I see frame drops here and there (poor thing is aging) and I wanted to know if the Surface Laptop would handle the job much better?

I've tried to use the Citibank app without success (no real surprise there, MS should remove this shameful app from the store), but more importantly and annoyingly, I can't seem to log into Citibank from Edge browser on my windows mobile (laptop is fine). Is Citibank deliberately blocking Windows Mobile access to its website?

Seeing a Command Prompt box flash quickly on Windows 10? It's because of Office, and here's the fix.

Do you see a Command Prompt box flash quickly on Windows 10? It's Office 365 fault. There is a fix coming, but here's what you can do now.

If you recently started noticing a Command Prompt box flashing quickly every hour on your Windows 10 computer, you should know that it's not a virus or malware trying to steal your information. It's actually a bug with Microsoft Office 365.
The anomaly is caused by two tasks, including OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration and OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerLogon that Office 365 automatically configures with the Task Scheduler on Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Office. And every time they run, they cause a window to appear quickly in the screen every hour, and every time you sign in to Windows 10. However, this is not an issue affecting everyone; it only seems to be happening for those users who are enrolled in the Fast ring of the Office Insider Program.

Can't open photos after updating with the creators update

Hi, I am having an issue with my Surface book, I updated to the creators update and now whenever I try to open a photo (jpg etc) It askes me what app I want to open it with, it does this over and over again without actually opening the photo. I can get the photo to open if I right click and select open with...

I thought this was just my laptop but I got my wife to check hers, seems hers is doing the same thing (we both updated yesterday and my surface book is 2 days old and hers was a fresh install of Win 10 (my old laptop) )

I've reverted back to the previous version of Win 10 on mine but left hers, does anyone have any ideas? There are no pending updates and no pending store updates. I have also checked the file associations are set up correctly (even put them back to default)

Thanks for any help in advance.

Should I enroll into Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Fast Ring now?

Hello! I have a question that I've been thinking about for some time now. Since the last few insider fast ring builds for mobile have only included bug fixes and other improvements, and Windows 10 Mobile is pretty much abandoned at this point, is it a good idea to move from production to fast ring and stay there to benefit from the extra bug fixes and improvements? Or is it a bad idea, because Microsoft may actually push a Redstone 3 build and then I'll have to revert all the way back to Windows Phone 8.1 in order to get to production? I don't know what to do. The reason I ask is because my Lumia 640 XL has some annoying bugs since updating to the creators update (the screen is flickering when watching videos or in the all apps view and I'm experiencing slow performance in some places), so I hope that maybe those issues have been fixed in those builds. Please answer whenever you can

How to expand your Surface Book's storage the cheap and easy way

Can you upgrade the storage in a Surface Book?
Updated May 29, 2017: We've refreshed this list to ensure you're still getting the cheapest and easiest way to expand your Surface Book's storage.
The Microsoft Surface Book is a very powerful laptop with a 2-in-1 design, a touch display with a unique aspect ratio, and a high price.
One of the best ways to lower the initial cost of a Surface Book is to dial back the hardware inside, namely the solid-state drive. You can save hundreds of dollars by opting for a 256GB storage option rather than a 1TB option.
Even if you did opt for a big 1TB solid-state drive, the reality of media today is that it will eventually fill up. In either case, you're probably wondering how to get a bigger drive when the Surface Book doesn't have upgradeable hardware.

Why the new Surface Pro's fanless Core i5 is both a serious processor and a great option

The new fanless Core i5 Surface Pro has a real dual-core processor in it. Let's break down why this is a not a Core-M marketing ploy.
Microsoft's recent announcement of the refreshed Surface Pro (2017) is resulting in plenty of discussions – and some confusion – about all the changes for this year. With over 800 new custom parts and updated internal hardware which is the best Surface Pro for you can be a complicated decision.
One area of misunderstanding that I have noticed amongst potential buyers is the new "fanless" Intel Core i5 model. Starting at $999 (4GB and 128GB storage) and going up to $1,299 (8GB and 256GB of storage) the super quiet Surface Pro appears to be the best bet for your average consumer.
But is that Core i5 a "real" processor or just a renamed Core M? Let's dive deeper though into Intel's confusing chip strategy and what it means for new buyers.

Licence Key / Activation question

I used to be a lot more enthusiastic about gaming, and built a pretty high spec PC in 2007 with 64 Bit Vista. However by 2010, apart from the odd foray here and there, I really wasn't into gaming that much. The PC itself has had a new CPU, Graphics card and PSU over its lifetime, and it does everything I want it to do just fine. (the PSU popped last year, and I was certain it would have taken out the motherboard and RAM too but amazingly all was well)

In 2012 I paid for a Windows 8 licence, and when Windows 10 came out I took advantage of the free upgrade.

This week my parents got a new PC as their old one was still running Vista, and they were having some issues. Not only did it run very slowly, but some websites were just refusing to connect. It took a while for the penny to drop that support had stopped and they had never used the upgrade to Windows 7 the PC had come with. With the recent hacking stories, and my Dads habit of clicking on links without a seconds hesitation, this was an accident waiting to happen.

We got them a new W10 PC, and I took the old one away to wipe the HDD and dispose off. However, I was curious to see how it would run with a fresh installation of an OS. It came with a recovery partition for Vista, so I re-installed it and was impressed at how well it ran. I then found my paperwork for my W8 purchase and decided to download an ISO of W8.1 and see how that went. Again, it runs really well and if I decide to sell it, a W8.1 machine is a lot more useful than a Vista one

My question is, my W10 Licence / Activation has its roots in the W8 purchase from 2012. W8 became W8.1 became the various updates of W10, and today I have the Creators update.

By (successfully) using my W8 product key with so far no ill effects, am I risking this? I thought the W8 code would just be rejected, and when it worked, I then started panicking that it would de-authorise my W10? All good so far but any input would be welcome.

Tablets - Windows, Android and Apps

Hello,

I am considering getting my first tablet. The thing that prompted me into looking into getting one of my own was that my husband is now bored of me stealing his (hateful) iPad to play games on it that I cannot get on my Lumia phone. (Don't know the model number but it is the now discontinued one with the big screen, the 15-something)

Anyway. I am Windows through and through. My first smart phones were Android but that was back in th very early days of Apple alternatives and it didn't do much then like it does now.

Are the apps for Windows tablets just as limited as they are for Windows phone?

Is there any way to run an Android simulator on a Windows tablet to get access to Android apps and games and would the simulator work as well as having an actual Android tablet or should I just break the chain and get an Android based tablet?

Any help gratefully received as I do not want to part with upwards of 5000,- Danish Krone for something I either can't get to work properly or don't enjoy using.

Thank you.

The company is now following it up with the Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition, an 18-core/36-thread CPU that will retail later this year for $1,999. The 7980XE is also the first consumer chip from Intel to offer a teraflop of compute power.

HELP! I've tried almost everything I can think of and I can't get the firmware to update!

Hey guys - just purchased a Surfacebook i5 128gb 8GB (base model) new. Unfortunately due to being out of the the United States at the moment a return is not possible unless as a last resort.

Here's the issues I have currently noticed.
- FIRMWARE: Surface Embedded Controller Firmware, Surface Management Engine, Surface Touch, Surface UEFI. [confirmed with photo of UEIFI BIOS showing old version 88.858.768 instead of 9x.xxx.xxx](http://ift.tt/2r6JxyV)
- Battery not charging (Keyboard dock is charging fine however tablet is not: both connected to dock and directly to power source) [Here is a picture of the battery report generated by windows. As you can see it looks like one of the batteries has never been engaged](http://ift.tt/2qBrBJn)

All of the firmware are all stuck on either 1.0.0.0 (1/05/2015) or alternatively on the most current firmware and not working. I have attempted to

- update them via device manager and they download but show a false installation. [see picture showing different driver states in device manager + battery charge and windows version](http://ift.tt/2r6okVA)
- download the .msi and install as well as manually install the drivers via the .zip file.
- force windows to update via command prompt
- Reset PC
- Go back to previous version of Windows.

When I restart it shows the firmware update beginning for maybe half a second or so then flashes off a few times before rebooting. I can see it windows thinks it has installed the firmware but from observation it has not.

As you can see the battery is fully charged on the keyboard but the tablet itself is not charged. I removed the tablet from the keyboard and tried plugging it directly into the power cord and it did not charge which leads me to think that it's a software communication issue.

I've spent the last 12 hours or so troubleshooting and have tried some stuff I forgotten to list so if anyone has any help or tips or anything please please please help. I'm not used to the locked down nature of the BIOS of the Surface so I was originally thinking I could update the firmware via that but it doesn't look like that is possible.

**TLDR** Bios stuck on old version, Firmware won't update to latest version but thinks it has, Tablet power won't charge via dock or straight cable.

Lumia 950xl wifi disconnects when phone goes to lock screen

So, I've been having this problem for a few weeks. Even trie to hard reset and see if it fixes it, but no luck. What happens is that after my 950xl screen goes off, the wifi disconnects (not sure how long to do it, but it does). This is very annoying, because I tend to loose notifications from the apps. A mvp from Brazil told me that this is normal behavior, to save battery, but that the wifi remains on a semi-connected state, so I won't loose notifications, but as I mentioned, this is not the case. Anyone also viewing this? Any fix? There are some people on reddit who also encountered it (http://ift.tt/2sfkxmC), and a page on microsoft answers page: http://ift.tt/2sfkKqb

Has the function been stuffed by google or something?

Pretty good to use when listening to talks or music.

how to speed up cortana?

HI,

I have a Lumia 650 and 550 with the latest windows 10 mobile update. For some reason Cortana is not or barely usable due to being very unresponsive or slow . It understands perfectly my voice, write the sentence as understood but then it takes for ever for anything to happen making it unusable. The circle keep turning.

Can I prioritize cortana or make it way more responsive or is it a normal behavior for these telephones?

Thank you for your help

So, you want to stream your PC games to another room in the house. Is the Steam Link or the NVIDIA Shield TV the better tool for that job?

How can I find out what makes up the 'Other' section of my Windows 10 'Storage usage' page?

My Windows 10 'Storage usage' page indicates that 398GB of my 465GB 'This PC' hard drive is made up of items in the 'Other' section. This is an awful lot. However, when I click on the 'Other' section and look at the items it lists, they don't even add up to 1GB, let alone 398GB! How can I find out what is taking up all that space, so that I can then begin deleting stuff? My lack of hard drive space is seriously affecting the performance of my PC. Thank you in advance for your help. Dan

Free upgrade of Simple Choice plan from 2.5 to 4GB high speed?

FWIW, T-Mobile called a week or so ago to offer a free upgrade from 2.5GB to 4GB for our 6 lines. The increase is thru sometime in 2019 but the 2.5GB plan was also just thru some time in 2015 and when the time was up they made it permanent so they probably will do the same for the 4GB.

Not sure who or why they call, but if you are on that plan and haven't gotten the call, it might be worth calling them and pushing for it.
