is there a way to fix phantom touch in my surface pro 3?

i have been experiencing several issues using my 5 month old surface pro 3. it started when i shifted to windows 10, it didn't worked well and i shifted back to windows 8. after-which, the screen on the right side of my tablet didn't worked until i was able to download a calibration tool which helped fixed the dead spots in the screen, but left the windows button not functioning. now my problem is the phantom touch and i can't seem to find anything to have it fixed.

How to install Linux distros properly on Windows 10

Are you getting errors installing Linux distros on Windows 10? In this guide, we'll tell you exactly what you need to do to fix this issue.

Starting with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft is making some Linux distros, including Ubuntu, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12, and OpenSUSE Leap 42 available in the Windows Store. Additionally, it's no longer a prerequisite to enable Developer mode, which makes the installation of Linux distros a lot easier.
However, a number of users a seeing an error code 0x8007007e as they try to install any of the distros, but it's not a bug in the software. I finally broke down and bought an Android, letting Windows go after 15 years

The first Windows "phone" that I had ever bought, dates way back to Windows Mobile 2003. Coming from a Samsung N200, I fell in love with the phone and thought "this is going to go somewhere BIG!".

Years went by and competition began to rise and conquer the world of market share and compatibility. By then, I was running around with Windows Mobile 6.5 device (HTC Tilt 2) and still thought it was a great phone. However, I knew that certain alternatives were quicker and had really nice capacitive touch screens. Windows Mobile at this point was still laggy, buggy and mediocre in technology. I guess I was really trying to hold onto that physical keyboard that I could type on without even looking. However, the performance of the phone started to weigh and me, and app support was dropping like flies. In fact, the only reason I could get it to do half the stuff it did, was because I had unlocked the phone to download apps from 3rd party sources. Even this wasn't selling me anymore. I was on the verge of letting Windows go.

Then, Windows Phone was born from the ashes of Windows Mobile, and I smiled big. This is a positive step. At first, it didn't have hardly any app support, and the interface was a little too basic with a lack of oddly missing features (like MMS). However, I am a long-time Windows fan, so I kept faith. It flourished towards Windows Phone 8.1 and I had dumped the HTC phones (at this point I have been using phones like the HTC Surround) for the Nokia 920. This phone became the longest running phone I had ever kept use of. I held onto it for 4 years vs the average 1-1.5 years.

To this day, it is one of my favorites. I came across and second one for cheap as a backup even. I dropped the darn phone from such a height and my buddy accidently ran it over with his car (don't ask) and yet it STILL worked with no cracks. The most dependable phone I had ever had. The only drawback was apps. I constantly felt that empty pit inside from so many people telling me "oh...I'm sure, but we don't support Windows Phone. Our app (or device) works on iOS and Android only". Eventually, I bit the bullet and bought the Microsoft Lumia 950XL. Oh boy, this is a great phone. Not as durable (at least since for the first time, I had to pay a large price for a phone thanks to the suddenly WAY over-priced carriers along with the rest of corporate America, thus I wasn't feeling the need to challenge its durability). but the hardware was one of the best things to ever hit Windows Phone.

Fast forward to now. It's been 15 years of holding my Windows device high saying: "it may be beat out by all the others in support, but it at least was the first and MS will figure their stuff out eventually". However, now the doubt has overshadowed everything. 15 years of hope and lack of app support, for what? I still hear from most everyone that their stuff doesn't support Windows. The other two platforms have a VAST collection of smart watches and devices. Windows Phone has......Fitbit. Even the Microsoft Band was a complete disaster. A great ideal and good attempt for a first gen device....if it didn't fall apart 4-6 months later. The 2 came out and collapsed due to the same issues. At this point, I don't think MS has our back in the mobile world afterall. Some of the moves they keep making have been angering what little market share they have. The latest of which was dumping support for Windows 8/8.1 users. Well, if that is still 80% of Windows Phone users, then they just alienated 80% of the tiny market share they have left. Sounds like a gun to the head to me.

Finally, I ran into one more company who didn't support Windows and had no intention of ever supporting it because they felt it was a dying platform. That MS wasn't serious enough about promoting it. They simply release a phone and move on to other things. No major ad campaigns or anything else. The same day, I carpooled to lunch with a friend who was enjoying his SiriusXM via his non-Windows device..........I want to be able to listen to my SiriusXM again too. I haven't been able to do that since Windows Mobile 6.5. This thought clouded my head for the rest of the week.

I know have a Samsung Galaxy S8+. I still prefer the Windows Phone 10 interface. Android seems a little too busy with stuff going on at times (and so so many notifications to have to disable). However, I feel like I can breath for the first time in my mobile life. I want an app for something? There IS an app for something. I want a device to go with my phone? I can EASILY find a device that supports my phone. I want to remote access my box that has VNC running on it? I CAN access my device via my phone again..............I can listen to my SiriusXM.

It took 15 years to determine, Microsoft stinks at being aggressive when it comes to the mobile market. It seems the only way to get into the market for them is 1) write the darn apps themselves until companies begin to take the leash since the architecture would already be there, and 2) over-saturate the market with devices like Android did. They might as well stand outside the Apple store with a box of Windows Phone, offering a free upgrade to everyone to decides not to enter and switch sides instead. However, 2) could only be possible if they fixed the issues with 1). I just don't see it happening at this point (ever). Not until you can truly install a program (not app) onto a phone like you can a desktop computer. When Photoshop can be fully installed on your phone because it is running a true/full copy of Windows, I can see app publishers rushing back. Now take that and mesh it into the whole UWP approach when it comes to interface. At least hardware has reached the point where something like that is possible.

For now, I will enjoy my new Android, and the ability to do just about whatever the heck I want

Hey Windows phone fans — ignore the haters, use what you love

"Windows phone is dead" has been the popular quarterly headline and social media mantra for the past couple of years. But for many fans who don't care what the naysayers say, Windows phone is wanted - dead or alive.
Windows phone fans are a hardy bunch. We've endured broken promises, broken platforms, broken communities and if the harsh, inconsiderate and outright mean words of some had their desired effects, broken spirits would be part of that list.

But that's not the case. Despite the name-calling, Microsoft's lack of interest, the platform's shortcomings and its uncertain future, we use what we love. And we love Windows phone in all of its troubled glory.
The fluidity of the UI, the uniqueness of Live Tiles, the integration of Microsoft services and more are things we've chosen not to live without.

Sure rival platforms are more popular, better supported, tied into smart home hubs and intelligent automobiles and are solidly positioned for the foreseeable future. But we love using Windows phone, and it works for us. It's neither intellectually unsound nor delusional to use the platform one loves to use if it works for them. It's simply a choice.
We're not naïve to the platform's problems nor Microsoft's failures either. We're painfully aware of the roller coaster ride of promises and disappointments that has been the Windows-on-mobile journey. And even though the promise of Windows 10 Mobile has devolved into a platform in "sustain mode," we still love Windows phone as we anticipate what's next.

Best way to wirelessly transfer files between iPhone and Windows 10 PCs?

Hello folks,

I recently switched from Mac to a Surface PC, and I'm basically just trying to figure out ways to replace all of the Mac features I used most frequently on my new Surface Pro. One Mac/iOS feature I used very often was AirDrop, to quickly send images or other files between my iPhone and Mac.

As far as I can tell Apple doesn't let you send files via Bluetooth between iPhones and PCs, which sucks because that would probably be the easiest way to replace that functionality. I found an iOS app called Transfer Pro that gets the job done via browser-based commands. And you can obviously use cloud storage services. But I'm wondering if any of you smart people have any other suggestions. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Noisy processor!

Thought I'd start a new thread for problems with machine No.2 :eck:

It still has the same issues as my previous one, i.e. light bleed, slow Wi-Fi and lagging Bluetooth... but the Bluetooth is slightly better so I just thought sod it I'll keep it. However! I've now noticed, the processor is really noisy! Or something like that. Basically when doing literally anything like even scrolling down one line in a browser, or highlighting some text, the processor makes like a static sound, if that makes sense? I noticed my original Surface Pro doing it every now and then, but this new one is way, way worse.

It's frustrating because no fans is a blessing, I absolutely love it, but if I'm sitting in silence I now have this other sound annoying me! Has anyone else noticed this? I'm running the i5 by the way.

If everyone else's is just the same then I'll guess I'll have to live with it.

Please try and comment if you can, thanks!

Microsoft's "Always Connected" Game Plan - "beginning" to unfold !!!

It sure appears that this latest series of announcements at Computex 2017 (May 31, 2017) is clearly signaling how Satya Nadella is positioning for a "Cloud First, Mobile First" ecosystem.

Perhaps, the "long rumored Surface Phone" IS ACTUALLY - as many people, including Daniel on the latest podcast - is actually more like a "Surface POCKETable" device ... Always Connected via eSIM and LTE.

I quote from the announcements below:

"New "Always Connected PCs" allow constant connectivity
There is a new generation of users that need to be connected to the cloud at all times. They are students, creators, freelancers, small businesses, and enterprises.* This means sharing experiences across screens and leveraging the latest network technology like gigabit LTE and eSIM. We are collaborating with our ecosystem on a shared vision. This starts with a close partnership at the silicon layer, with Intel and Qualcomm and with our mobile operator partners to provide seamless eSIM connectivity. Microsoft device partners ASUS, HP, Huawei, Lenovo, VAIO, and Xiaomi, are committed to this new category of Always Connected PCs using eSIM technology. In addition, Microsoft announced Always Connected devices will be coming from ASUS, HP, and Lenovo on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. These new devices will feature Windows 10, always-on LTE connectivity and great battery life."

There are a few bugs, like the keyboard in cascade mode during texting that are annoying me.

I am considering putting on an insider build, and curious which build would be best to start at. I know I do not what to use the fast build presently.

As someone who thoroughly enjoys both Rainbow Six Siege and For Honor, but can't bring myself to play them actively because of the lack of dedicated servers, these recent developments are incredibly welcome news.
We've known Rainbow Six Siege is picking up dedicated servers for a while, under what Ubisoft calls "Operation Health," but now it looks as though For Honor is getting the dedicated server treatment as well.

Will Destiny 2 support 4K on Xbox One X? Bungie isn't saying, yet

Destiny 2 made a considerable splash at E3 2017, and the popular loot 'em up shooter looks set to be one of this year's biggest launches.
Still, there remains a question mark over whether Destiny 2, which historically favors PlayStation users, will support the extra power found in the Xbox One X. At least for the time being, Bungie is reluctant to say.
Sony has a pervasive (and likely expensive) marketing deal in place with the Destiny franchise, which went to great lengths to prevent Microsoft from marketing (or even mentioning) the Xbox One version of the original game. It doesn't seem to be as aggressive and anti-competitive for Destiny 2, thankfully, but many questions have been raised about whether Bungie will actually utilize the Xbox One X's additional power, or hold the game back to keep it in-line with Sony's weaker PlayStation 4 Pro.
On the PS4 Pro, Destiny 2 will be able to achieve 4K in certain situations, leveraging dynamic scaling during more intense sequences. Will the Xbox One X receive the same treatment? Bungie isn't saying.

Windows 10 S: Pros & Cons: Hardware vs. Software

Okay, so we have the release of Windows 10 S. Pros and cons aside, there is only one question that matters: who would buy it? This question resolves in a showdown of hardware vs. software in an effort for the hardware to be worth supplementing with the software. Find yourself in a fancy grammatical twist? Good. Let's start.

The Hardware:

Okay, what's under the hood? Right now, the most notable example is the Surface laptop. According to the specifications, it's got either an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, a 13.5-inch 2256 x 1504 touch display, Gorilla Glass (mind the banana), 4, 8, or 16GB RAM configurations, 128, 256, or 512 GB SSD configurations, integrated graphics, a 45WH battery, and a price tag that could add up to almost $2200 for the most powerful configurations. On a personal note, the chassis of this laptop is almost as stiff as a board, so you would be expecting great build quality. The hardware in this laptop is probably comparable to the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1's hardware in terms of specs.

So who does this hardware appeal to? Definitely the ultraportable consumer market, including families with kids, students both grade school and college, businesses in need of portable cash registers (you've most likely seen this approach in Microsoft stores), etc.

Who would the hardware most likely not appeal to? Definitely the tech savvy market. I know that people like me who like the option of taking apart the computer, customizing or fixing it wouldn't be too thrilled. Media enthusiasts, who work in multiple monitor situations constantly wouldn't be too thrilled, since the surface laptop only has 1 mini-display port. Anyone who does not need a touch screen would probably not go for this laptop. The gaming enthusiasts wouldn't approve, since there is no dedicated graphics card option. The same goes for people requiring mobile workstation processing power.

Who does the price tag appeal to? Businesses, mostly. College students? Probably not. Most college students that I've seen have older, less bleeding edge laptops like Surface Pro 3's, ASUS, Acer, HP, and various older gaming laptops. Schools, probably, if they could find it in their budget to cough up enough cash.

Who would the price tag not appeal to? Well, anyone who can't afford it. The base $999 price tag is a little steep for the size and specs. This laptop is comparable to the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 in both price and quality.

The Software:

If you take away the pricing, the hardware by itself is pretty solid. But hardware without software is just junk. So, let's take a look at the functionality of Windows 10 S. The one distinct feature of this version of Windows is that it only allows store apps to be installed and run. This is the opposite feature of the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB (Long-Term Servicing Branch) version where Windows store apps were removed. This can be an advantage and a takeaway at the same time.

Microsoft claims that this feature provides more security in the OS. That claim is both valid and invalid, depending on what kind of user runs the computer. If an educated, cautious user uses the OS, then yes, it would be more secure since the user would always be aware of what they are installing and the fact that there is only one installation repository reinforces that notion. If an uneducated or un-cautious user uses the OS, then it would be as insecure as regular Windows. There are still scamming and suspicious apps in the Windows store to this day, and Microsoft doesn't always catch them. Restricting where the apps come from does make the OS slightly more secure, but never underestimate the regretted mouse click. Also never underestimate phishing advertisements and other traps found inside apps that can infect the OS. If an OS exists, someone is making exploits for it. That's always the case.

Take away all the duplicate apps, and you'll find that nearly all programs for the PC are Win32 apps (not 32-bit, Win32 means Desktop). This includes Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Visual Studio (for you coders out there), java (regrettably), drivers (most importantly), most games, Antivirus, etc. While people may not need Win32 apps when there is an equivalent in the Windows store, users like using the programs that they are used to.

So, who would use Windows 10 S? Well, schools for the most part. The grade school student environment is practically made for Window 10 S, since they want to restrict what the students can do. Businesses that write their own UWP apps for use internally would use this OS. Families who want to restrict what their young children do on their tablets would approve of the limited features.

Who would disapprove of this OS? Well, tech savvy people (again) for not having the flexibility and customization options of regular Windows. Businesses who need the use of Win32 apps would not use this OS. Schools who need main or faculty PC's would probably not approve of the lack of flexibility in this OS. College students who use anything more than a word processor would disapprove for the same reason. Anyone who does not want to use a Microsoft account would not be happy with this OS.

So, is this OS worth putting into a $999 computer? For businesses and school districts that can raise enough money to afford them, it is worth it. For people who want an alternative to Chromebooks, it isn't. Chromebooks are usually marketed to the low-cost consumer market. To compete with Chromebooks, Microsoft needs to lower the price of Windows 10 S ultrabooks. For people who can buy a Windows 10 Pro laptop at a lower price? Not really. But, Microsoft has offered a limited time upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 10 S for free until the end of this year. To make Windows 10 S a worthy investment, I would like to see that offer extended indefinitely.

So, what are your opinions of Windows 10 S? Do you agree with my points, or do you think I should have added something more? Let's open this discussion.

The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy has (maybe) been outed for Xbox One

Activision recently released a remastered Crash Bandicoot "N. Sane" trilogy for PlayStation 4, but rumors of it hitting Xbox One have been a' plenty.
From random Crash Bandicoot Xbox store listings, ambiguous messaging, and the refusal to deny the rumors have at least left the door open for Naughty Dog's classic platforming series to eventually hit Xbox One. Today, we may have (very maybe) got confirmation.
Until Activision itself offers an official announcement, take this with a grain of salt (or a huge pile of salt if you're a PlayStation fanboy), but one of the game's interface artists recently showed off the game's menus with Xbox controller button prompts, rather than PlayStation ones. Oops.

What 343i needs to fix in Halo 6: Art, game features, user interface, and business model

The next installment in the Halo series (assumed to be Halo 6) poses a chance for 343 Industries to bring Halo back to its former glory. But what needs to change?
The latest main entry into the Halo franchise, Halo 5, is a game that has capitalized and expanded on many changes made to the Halo formula since Halo 3.
Some of us like these changes and some strongly hate them, but one thing that's certain is that Halo isn't the titan of the gaming industry it once was 10 years ago. And while you could argue that Halo is on the decline due to the series' age and/or its increasing competition in the market, industry staples like Zelda, Call of Duty, and Mario all continue to drive considerable amounts of hype and interest irrespective of their age.
Halo 5 remains a popular entry in the series, over all, but with a bit of TLC, Halo 6 could take the franchise back to its glory days.

Do you think MS should go ahead and help build Win32 ecosystem on Windows Store?

Hello,

Windows 10S is an idea to gradually build up universal app ecosystem to the point that can get Mobile platform relive.

However, as many have pointed out, on the desktop/laptop/tablet, the browsers like Chrome/Edge is the main culprit to hinder the ability users to reach out for apps.

I think it's time for MS to build a team to reach/consult all open source/free apps like 7-zip, filezilla, paint.net... and help them build their own Win32 Centennial apps and upload to the Windows store so that Windows 10S can be a success and to the point that people will prefer installing apps from the store to downloading manually and not knowing beforehand if it's safe for the machine.

At that stage, MS should change the way Windows 10S behaves, like allowing to manually download and deploy new apps but the OS should pop up warning message like 'It's not safe to install softwares/app outside the Windows Store. This app could be a malware...' ... , pushing players like Google to publish its own Chrome browser to the store.

To switch someone's mind, you must give an intiative, and MS should start first, the rest will follow. They can pick the most popular free/open source tools to start with.

What do you think about that ?

(sorry for my english :D)

The Long Dark picks up a moving launch trailer ahead of its full Xbox One and PC release

The Long Dark is a, frankly, amazing survival game for Xbox One and PC.
Hitting Steam early access in 2014, and Xbox One game preview in 2015, The Long Dark is finally ready for the prime time with the first instalment of its episodic story mode, dubbed Wintermute.
The Long Dark takes place in the ice-blasted north of Canada, where a geological catastrophe has created unnaturally cold weather. Crash landing in a landscape with procedurally generated creatures, loot, and resources, it's up to you to survive the cold for as long as possible, moving throughout the game's sizable maps in search of shelter, firewood, and food.
Seeing The Long Dark grow into what it is today has been nothing short of delightful, and even in early access, the game has given me some of my strongest and fondest memories of gaming on Xbox One. The launch trailer for The Long Dark is officially here, and it's as sobering and mysterious as the game itself.

I have built a new PC that can handle any game that is out there. However, I'm a bit of an old fart and don't like games that I have to be online for, and I'm mostly interested in FPD games. For example, my FAVORITE game is the original Quake and Unreal. I also love Quake II and Unreal II, Bioshock (the entire series), DOOM, F.E.A.R., DeadSpace, and Halo (at least the first two since only those are for PC).

I am only a PC gamer, and I enjoy "old" games and FPS games that I don't necessarily have to be online to play. I don't go online and play with friends. Why? Because I'm WAY too terrible of a game player to compete with anyone! :winktongue:

I don't really keep up with all the new games coming out, but I would be very grateful for suggestions from you all that DO, as far as games similar to the ones I've mentioned above. Please provide me with your suggestions.

I'm more of a winter-time gamer as during non-winter times, I like to be outside doing things. This will give me time to research your suggestions and prepare for making purchases.

Thank you VERY much in advance for your suggestions. I sincerely appreciate it.

Band 2 Shut down problem

Hi all, I got the same shut down problem as you guys. And I've read many threads about this matter, but I still wonder what is the conclusion of this?

Is it when your band 2 begins to shut down AND the warranty is over. Then accept the fact and buy yourself a new one from another brand. That is the end of story???

Mine is still in warranty but what is the point to replace it, it is quite sure it will shut down anytime.

I wonder Is Microsoft free of liability in legal sesnse? So many says that is a design fault, so many users got the same problem. Microsoft didn't even recall or repair it. And customers got no ground to take any action?

After all, the price of Microsoft Band 2 is't cheap, but just for a few months usage.

Auto brightness yes or no

Surface Book owners, do you like the auto brightness feature of your laptop? Do you have it enabled or did you disable it?

I have been using my laptop with auto brightness enabled, but I generally prefer to have the same brightness on my screen, independent of the outside lightning conditions, so I disabled it for the moment.

Should KEYone give WP/10M Fans Hope?

With the launch of the K1 Blackberry has risen from the dead. Yes...i said Blackberry. Now don't misunderstand, I'm not suggesting that BB will surpass iphones or Galaxy's in terms of sale volumes. All I mean is that they've managed to produce a phone that is being received VERY well by enterprise and consumers alike (due to its excellent hardware and software).

For yrs BB fans, like us WP fans, we're hoping against hope for a rebirth of their beloved brand. In fact, I would dare say that BB fans are as loyal, fierce, and yes sometimes defensive of their brand as us. And guess what? All their patience paid off. The rebirth of BB is well underway.

So should this give us hope? Can MS rebirth our dying brand and make a phone thats well received by almost everyone (like the K1)?

How to transfer vinyl records to your PC with Audacity

Want to get your old vinyl records onto your PC? Here's how you can do it.
If you bought a fancy new turntable with a USB output, you might also have a piece of 'special software' included that can help you record your classic sounds to your modern PC.
But that's not the case for everyone. Many won't have a USB output and many more won't have any software to digitize their records with. Hopefully, that's where this guide can help.
Thanks to a free piece of software called Audacity, anyone can transfer their vinyl records to their PC, not fancy USB-equipped turntable required.

The Thrifter team is back again, this time with an even easier way to add USB plugs to your existing outlets!
Not everyone out there wants to replace the electrical outlets in their home with ones that offer a USB connector, but luckily you don't have to. Adding USB outlets can be as simple as grabbing a screw driver and replacing the outlet cover. You don't need to turn off the power, you don't have to hire an electrician, just swap them out and start plugging in your cables.

Microsoft Lumia 640XL performance

my lumia is painfully slow when trying to open a sequence of apps, especially those stored on the sd card. Should I move them back to my device's storage even if it depletes most of it, or could there possibly be any other way around?😵
