Just take control of RT updates and install only what is needed when you want with regedit..
Don't know why but I have found the needed key, AUOptions, in two locations.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\auto update\AUOptions
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\auto update\AUOptions
You will find this value set to 4. Modify this value to 2.
1 : Never check for updates
2 : Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
3 : Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
4 : Install updates automatically
Always use Windows Update from the control panel, hide the updates you don't want to install
Defender will not auto update. Put a shortcut to defender on the desktop, open defender, update tab, 'Update Definitons', update when you think about it.
Enjoy
