Microsoft is selling the Surface Studio for up to £1000 off in the UK

You can now save yourself some serious cash on a brand new Surface Studio from Microsoft, but you probably shouldn't buy one anyway.
For the first time ever, Microsoft is selling its Surface Studio at its online store for a discounted price in the United Kingdom, with savings of up to £1000 on offer depending on the model you go for. Microsoft has never sold its Surface Studio for a discount before now, which means Microsoft is likely trying to shift the last of its stock to make room for the rumoured Surface Studio 2.

How to install mods for Skyrim Special Edition on PC

Bethesda has re-released Skyrim for every electronic device in living history, including the trust microwave. As for the Special Edition on PC, many wondered why the company even bothered since graphics are only marginally better, but what makes this latest version so good is the addition of 64-bit support. This unlocks the full potential of Skyrim and the modding scene, which should enable for a more stable experience (especially when you hit the 200 mod marker).

Here's a quick guide to get started installing mods on PC. We'll be using the Nexus Mod Manager, which is universally recommended to keep things organized and to make installing larger packages an absolute breeze.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 vs. XPS 15: Which is better for you?

Both have 4K display options and dedicated GPUs, but which comes out on top?
Leading the way when it comes to Dell's 15-inch Ultrabooks is the XPS 15 9570, rocking some impressive hardware in a design we're familiar with. A small step down is the Inspiron 15 7570, a cheaper alternative that still has a lot going for it. Have a taste:
In hindsight, it's pretty clear exactly what we should have expected. Amazon Fire TV is a known entity. We've used it for years, and it's a great option for streaming TV. Amazon Echo is a great hands-free voice assistant thing. We've used Alexa for years.

Battlefield V and the media drama

So, in an interview EA chief creative officer, Patrick Soderlund countered to people objecting to Battlefield V depicting women by saying "We stand up for the cause, because I think these people who don't understand it, well, youhave two choices: either accept it or don't buy the game. I'm fine with either or. It's just not ok."

This was taken from Gamasutra: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...attlefield.php

I'm curious if EA is shooting themselves in the foot by some of the statements given in this interview. To me, this almost seems like the backlash that Hollywood has been doing lately with Ghostbusters 2016, and SW: The Last Jedi. The statement of 'accept it or don't buy the game' to me, seems like it's asking for trouble.

I'll admit, I wasn't interested in buying this game from the start. I became less interested when I found out you could repair a horse with a wrench (my brain still hurts from that one) as stated by this: https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/2...t-buy-the-game

What do you all think? Is this going to hurt sales of the game?

Assassin's Creed is veering too far away from its original formula

By becoming more combat-focused, Assassin's Creed becomes less like itself.
Last year's Assassin's Creed Origins was a leap of faith into risky territory for the franchise, but it ended up paying off. Most people loved the game, including our own Xbox editor Matt Brown, and the addition of systems from other role-playing games (RPGs) offered a new style of play for gamers.
However, while Origins was fun, I don't think the changes it brought were a good fit for the series. And with Assassin's Creed Odyssey adding more of these types of mechanics, the problem is only getting worse.
Here's why I think Assassin's Creed is losing its identity.

Cortana Selfies

Watching TV the other night I saw an Android phone commercial (don't remember which one as I wasn't really paying too much attention at the time). In the commercial a person says, "hey Google, take a selfie". Another person says "Can it do that?". Then the phone assistant takes a selfie. Everyone is excited.

Which got me to thinking...Can Cortana do that? So I picked up my Elite X3 and said :Hey Cortana, take a selfie". And you know what? She did take a selfie.

Sadly, while Google shows this feature as something new and exciting and a reason to buy an Android phone, Microsoft's Cortana had this feature all along but we were never told about it.

Another example of really bad Microsoft marketing.

Changing from Microsoft account to local account for sign in - impact on Office 365, etc?

So I retired my Windows 7 Sony Vaio Pro 13 aand replaced it with a Huawei Matebook X Pro.

This was not my first foray in Windows 10 - I have 2 Windows 10 computers at work and a HP Elite X2 tablet / 2-in-1. I have a Microsoft account and an Office 365 subscription; use OneDrive, etc.

Problem is that my HP Elite X2 user and my Huawai Matebook X Pro user accounts are the same - i.e., my Microsoft account. That's causing issues with my home server (an ancient Acer H-340 running WHS v1).

So I thought I'd switch to a local account on one or the other.

Microsoft's Cortana needs be the best enterprise assistant to survive

Microsoft needs to flex its enterprise muscles and make Cortana an absolute beast of an enterprise assistant.
Cortana, Microsoft's beleaguered digital assistant, has gone from what Microsoft said was "the world's most personal digital assistant" to a virtual unknown among consumers.
Contrary to the enterprise-to-consumer dynamic that drove personal computing's early evolution, consumers are now a major industry driver. Consumer-focused smartphones are a nexus and launchpad for today's multifaceted personal computing experiences. Digital assistants, smart homes, augmented reality (AR) platforms, app ecosystems, smart speakers and more are being propelled into the mainstream by mobile platforms.

Without a smartphone, Microsoft is a non-participant in these emerging segments though it has made attempts. Perhaps the lack of a competitive mobile platform, persistent misinterpretation of the consumer market or ineptness in executing its plans, has led to Microsoft's vanishing consumer presence.

Whatever the reason, Cortana, like most of Microsoft's efforts, has been relegated to the enterprise as prospects for her consumer success wane. Today, making "her" the best enterprise assistant may be the only way Microsoft can ensure her survival.

With Windows 10 and Surface, Microsoft is (finally) making real consumer gains

Between the Microsoft Store, new Surfaces, and Xbox, Microsoft's latest trend toward genuine consumer success is a welcome change.
In the Windows and Microsoft enthusiast community, there is constant tension. Some believe Surface, Xbox, and Windows 10 reveal the best of what the company has for consumers, while the fates of Windows Phone, Band, and Groove portray a failing company that has its head stuck in the (intelligent) clouds.
The truth lays somewhere in between.
There is no hiding the fact that Microsoft has had some massive failures over the last few years, with mobile being the most damaging. But when you ask non-Microsoft fans about what they see, they tend to be impressed. (See tech journalist Owen Williams's excellent article "The Surface Book 2 is everything the MacBook Pro should be", for example.)
Over the last few months, though, the company appears to have shifted again, and it seems to be moving towards the consumer space. Again. Of course, many at Microsoft would say that they never were pulling away from consumers. But recent shifts and updates make clear it that non-business personal computing is still a focus.

Are you a proud Windows user? Tell us why!

To kick off summer (and just to have some fun), the Windows Central team decided to put together a team story on why we're all proud to call ourselves Windows users in 2018. As writers and editors for a Windows-focused site, we're obviously pretty passionate about the platform. But the reasons we came up with might not be what you expect.

We finished the story last week, and it will run this coming week. When it's live, I'll share the link here. But we're going to do a big social-media push focused on the story and the concept of sharing reasons to be proud to use Windows, using the hashtag #PCproud , and I wanted to get the conversation going here.

Are you proud to be a Windows? If so, let us know why in this thread, on Twitter and/or Instagram using the hashtag #PCproud . We'll be following this thread and that hashtag closely, and in a few weeks, we'll round up the best reasons from our readers and feature them in another story. So be creative!

Oh, and feel free to use the image below when you share your reasons on social. That's what it's for!

The Crew 2 review: Where more actually means less

Ubisoft's open-world racer ditches the cringe-worthy storyline and is all the better for it, but it's a bit hectic.
The Crew was always a good idea poorly executed. One of the biggest issues with that first game was the storyline. Part GTA, part Need for Speed, all dire. The good parts of the game were quickly swallowed up by the bits that made you want to stick pins your eyes.
To some, it might seem surprising that The Crew 2 even exists. But it does, and Ubisoft is taking another stab at the open-world racer. This time around things are very different. The Crew 2 is brimming with ambition and a few crazy ideas that could make or break it.
So, is it second time lucky for Ubisoft? Almost. Here's why.

What brand and model is the SSD inside of the Dell 9575 Xps 15 2-1 AND Do I need the i7 with 16GB?

1.) I can not find what models the SSDs are that are available as OEM with the XPS 15 2-1 9575. Can anyone provide this information?

Also,

2.) I am trying to figure out if I need the i7 with 16gb or if the i5 with 8gb will do just fine for my needs.

I am primarily a writer (I have tested the keyboard and I love it). I do however do a range of differing tasks that pertain to my writing. First of all I draw the art and landscapes for my novels. I also do 3d renderings of buildings and the like. My current device is holding me back majorly in this area, So I am wanting to make sure that I do not buy a device that will potentially hold me back as well. This will be my primary device with my 10" tablet being my secondary for the next 5 years. I need to make sure that it can seamlessly handle the art and the 3d rendering. obviously the writing will be overkill with either choice but I have not found a keyboard that worked better (I have MS and even the 1.1mm of travel on my crappy HP15 fatigues my fingers). As far as gaming goes, again the i5 will more than suffice seeing as I prefer to play mostly MMORPG on my computers and everything else on my console.

Thank you to all.
Sincerely,
Morthis Mejere

So what do you think? Will the i5 and 8gb be more than enough for me for the next 5 years doing mainly those 3 things (writing, art, and 3d rendering) or do I need the i7 with 16gb. (I will not get the i7 with 8gb as it seems like a waste not to get the 16 at that point.)

How to (sort of) play Beat Saber on Oculus Go

ALVR allows you to play a one-handed version of Beat Saber.
Oculus Go is a standalone wireless VR headset that natively allows you to enjoy some quality mobile Oculus experiences. Coupled with Air Light VR (ALVR), a free piece of open-source software, you can actually stream SteamVR games normally reserved for PC-based headsets to the Oculus Go.
While a lot of those SteamVR experiences won't work properly, Beat Saber seems to fall under the category of "partially working." You still don't have six degrees of freedom (6DoF) or two motion controllers, but you can certainly get a feel for the game. If you've been dying to try Beat Saber, you're in luck. Here's how to get Beat Saber (sort of) working with Oculus Go.

Microsoft is updating its Skype app for Windows 10 with a new design and more

Microsoft's old universal Skype app is no more as Microsoft replaces it with a new one built on React Native. Don't worry though, it's still a UWP app!
Ever since Windows 10 launched, the universal Skype app that comes preinstalled on all Windows 10 PCs has been more than terrible. It looked unfinished, slow, and was missing lots of features. It did improve a bit over time, but it never managed to lose that "unfinished" appearance that made the overall experience feel rough.

Microsoft's 'Xbox Community Content' platform could bring more mods to Xbox One games

Microsoft is bringing mod support to Xbox One games in a big way, at least according to a leaked internal presentation.
Microsoft has been rumored to be looking more deeply into mod support for Xbox One for quite a while, thanks to job listings we wrote about in the past. Now, thanks to some internal documents, we have a better idea of how Microsoft plans to turn Xbox One into a great platform for mods and for developers who want to allow mods in their games.
For those who don't know, mods are usually community-created maps, items, skins, and other in-game features that can be used to "modify" an existing game, primarily on Windows PC.
As of this writing, developers have to set up their own systems and services to bring mods to Xbox One. Halo 5 Forge, Fallout 4, and Skyrim Special Edition are a few prominent games that have their own modding systems, built by their respective studios. Devs, of course, will continue to be able to do that if they so choose, but Microsoft is setting up a system that would not only provide much of the infrastructure required to set up these features but also surface mods directly in a new section in the Xbox Store, similar to the Steam Workshop, to make them easier to discover.
