Why won't my surface turn back on?

So my last surface pro 4 wouldn't turn on one day. I tried charging it and pushing varieties of buttons that the help center told me to push. They ended up replacing it but I was wondering if anyone had that problem/ knows how I could prevent this from happening in the future.
