Trying to configure Windows 10 IOS integration etc..

Hi.
I have a new laptop with the latest Fall update and am trying to use the various continue and integration features to use with my iPhone.
Found this site which seemed to go through it all:
http://ift.tt/2lAoIYJ

However the Cortana app is completely different to the examples and has none of the 'Cross Device' options.
I am signed into the app and my PC with the same Microsoft account.
I have also tried adding my phone within Windows Settings as well and then adding mobile versions of Cortana and Edge but that also shows no apps yet linked.

I especially want to get the functionality to get sms notifications that the above article mentions and then reply on PC.

Any ideas please?
Andrew

P.S, In case this is a regional problem, I am in the UK.

Massive let down so far.

Firstly a bit of back story. almost 2 years ago now I bought an SP4 i7, I'm a commercial director and thought it would be good for writing up scripts, drawing storyboards and some basic editing when on the road.

I found it to be a nightmare, very buggy and the pen latency just wouldn't allow me the accuracy I needed. I sold it after 3 weeks and picked up an Ipad pro and pencil. Drawing on the ipad has been fantastic and it's help me win plenty of pitches. However, at £500 or so, it's a big expense for something that essentially I only use for drawing boards, I saw the new Surface Pro and with amazon offering the m3 version for £569 in the sale I thought if the drawing was improved then it would be a better all round tool for the money.

Anyway, it turned up on Thursday so I've had it 3 days now, and whilst it has shown glimpses of being fantastic, the overall experience has been nothing less than infuriating.

The first day was all good, setup went relatively well if a little slow, but then it's only the core m3 version so I didn't expect a rocket ship. However it then took the best part of the last 2 days to do updates, with multiple random failures. Finally this evening the updates actually installed and I got some proper time with the device.

Now I find that the touch screen no longer works for more than 20 seconds at a time, I went through the whole remote access repair thing with a microsoft agent, who was very helpful and polite. The issue seemed to be fixed so I loaded up sketchable only to find that I can't draw a straight line on the right hand side of the page, the line just jitters up and down, the left hand side of the page is fine. Two minutes into this experience the touch screen stops working again, I'm now back in a queue with microsoft support, for the second time on a 3 day old device!

I feel like the premise of the surface is great, but the reality of it so far over 2 devices is one of frustration. As it is at the moment I don't dare do any work on it as I just don't trust the reliability.

Love this phone

Yes, I know that Windows 10 Mobile is dead. Also, if I had to spend full price on it, I would not have done so. However, I paid $167 for a brand new unlocked Idol 4s at the Microsoft Store 3 days ago and it works well.

I love the text message reading through my bluetooth connection in my car, proper Onedrive Integration and fully supported Cortana integration. It has no issue connecting to the 2015 Dodge Dart Bluetooth connection I have so far. I also enjoy the fact that the screen can be set to never turn off.

I do have a Sony Xperia XA1 and is the only Android phone that works good for me. I also like the fact that the Idol 4s feels like it is the same size as the Lumia 950. I did have some data connection problems with the 4s but it appears that setting the APN to nxtgenphone took care of that.

12 days of tech tips: How to share digital Xbox One games

Deck the halls with boughs of holly! And games. Lots of games.
One of the most popular features of the Xbox One platform isn't really advertised, but for those in the know, it can be supremely useful for households with multiple consoles, and particularly if you're picking up additional Xboxes this holiday season for loved ones. 'Tis the season to share and gift, after all.

As a by-product of the Xbox One policy of allowing you to use your games anywhere by signing in to your Microsoft Account, you can share your entire Xbox One library with a friend or family member.
Your Xbox One account can be signed into two consoles at any one time, locally, and over the internet. You can be signed into two separate Xbox One consoles permanently as a result, taking advantage of the ability to use your digital Xbox licenses both locally and via a roaming profile. Using this method, you can share your game library so friends and family can play your games without purchasing additional copies — it even works for multiplayer!

Well I've killed my surface after 5 days.

Bought a new surface pro. It kept restarting and blue screening. Decided to reset but wanted a completely fresh install with no other partitions.

Loaded up a windows recovery USB and deleted all partitions leaving only the entire main drive.

Instead of erasing the whole drive and installing a fresh copy of widows, computer restarted and started going straight into bios.

I downloaded an actual image for my serial number from Microsoft and am able to go into the initial recovery screen using a bootable USB drive, select "use recovery drive" option but then every time I click on erase all programs and reset computer it stops at a blue screen saying "unable to reset your pc."

Out of ideas.

Pixel 2 or something else?

I'm currently using a 950 and have been using a Windows phone since the 1020. I'm begrudgingly looking to move to Android in the somewhat near future and have been researching/window shopping. I don't know how other people feel, but I find it very frustrating and cumbersome! So many phones with different specs, versions of Android, various manufacturer skins, and phones full of bloatware.

Anyway, I'm starting to lean towards the Pixel 2. I don't need the size of the XL and have read the XL has more issues anyway. I like the idea of a straight Android phone and more frequent updates, though I really abhor the lack of a headphone jack. I've also read that the Huawei Mate 10 will be coming to AT&T (and possibly Verizon) which seems to garner very positive reviews internationally, but it is heavily skinned and will have plenty of bloatware. I don't particularly care for the Samsung Galaxy phones.

I plan on using numerous Microsoft services on the phone, probably using the app Nine to continue using Outlook contacts/email/calendar/etc, and probably installing some sort of launcher (Microsoft, Launcher 10, Squarehome, etc.) So, are there other big differences between the Android phones to consider? Are the UI skins a big issue? Is the Pixel 2 a smart move? I'm not looking to buy one immediately, so I'll see what happens with the Huawei Mate 10.

Let's talk about Microsoft vs. Apple and a unified app platform

Do consumers want to run apps from their iPhone or iPad on their $3,000 MacBook Pro?
Apple is reportedly going to find out in late 2018 as they attempt to merge some of the app platforms from iOS to macOS. The reason is evident to anyone who tries to download apps for their MacBook, which is a store where new apps are few and far between - think Windows Phone, but in reverse.
I wrote about this topic last week and now have added a video on the topic as well. So far, many people are giving Apple the benefit of the doubt, which reveals more about Microsoft's lack of consumer confidence than Apple's prowess at succeeding where Redmond had failed.

The tech Team Windows Central uses every day

The Windows Central team is often asked what gear they use on a daily basis. So here we're going to talk about just that.
As we close out another year, there's been a lot of great technology that crossed our paths in 2017. Windows PCs continue to get more innovative and become more and more powerful, and choosing between them is a challenge.
We have buyer's guides galore, but ultimately, the Windows Central team is just like our readers in that we have to pick our own gear to use every day. We're often asked what we use and why, so let's end 2017 with a little insight into just that.
We narrowed it down to three categories: Our main PCs, the phones we're using, and a "wild card," for a piece of tech we're using that genuinely surprised us or makes the day go that little bit better.

Wobbly Kickstand?

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone else noticed a wobbly kickstand on their surface pro 2017 device. I just bought a 2017 256 GB model today to replace my first gen surface pro. I immediately noticed a wobble on the kickstand at 0-20 and 150-160 degree angles. It's quite pronounced with movements of up to 5 mm. Anything in between the wobble is far less. At 60 degree the wobble is similar to my surface pro first gen device. On other surface pro threads the eperiences are a mixed bag, but it definitely seems common with a few users. It's not clear to me if this is a production flaw or not. When I look more closely at the hinge, it seems that a spring or bearing of some sort seems looser. It's hard to see. Curious to know experinces from others. Is this a common thing. Or is it worth going back to the store for to replace? Has anyone noticed temperature affect the hinge mechanics. Not sure, but a theory in my head as to why possibly.

Thanks.

Issues with Idol 4S

I got myself and my parents each one of these phones to replace some aging and/or broken Windows phones (my dad recently broke his 4 year old Lumia 1020). We are all experiencing the same issues. I'm wondering how common these problems are and if perhaps this is just a poorly executed product that doesn't live up to its advertised specs.

All 3 phones are updated to the current Windows 10 Mobile build 15254.124 as of December 12, 2017.

Phone freezing:
We are all experiencing issues where the phone randomly freezes. When this occurs, a running app completely stops responding and the phone will not accept any type of input from the touch screen or any of the hardware buttons.

It sometimes only lasts a few seconds, but often the phone will take a minute or two to start working again. Sometimes the phone restarts itself after it freezes like this.

Touch Screen inconsistency:
I've tried with and without glove mode, but the same issues persist either way. I'm not sure "glove mode" actually changes anything. It definitely doesn't work like the Lumia 920's "super sensitive touch" with my gloves.
  • The touch screen sometimes registers multiple touches when touched once - a letter being entered multiple times when typing or the back button going back several pages at a time. In the case of the back button, the phone vibrates quickly for each time it registers a touch, so we can feel when it thinks that we've touched the back button more than once.
  • Swiping a word on the Wordflow keyboard will sometimes result in a break in the swipe motion. This results in the first letter of the desired word followed by a space and then a completely different word based on the rest of the swipe path.
  • Sometimes the touch screen starts typing each letter in a message 3 or 4 times making it impossible to type a coherent message until the phone is restarted.

Message recipients displayed incorrectly in the Messaging app
:
Often when we open the Messaging app, the contacts listed for each conversation appear incorrectly. The behavior sounds like a memory lag issue.

Examples:
  • Last night, I received from my cousin's wife last night. When I opened the messaging app, it showed the newest message was from my cousin. His name was also listed on the third conversation which actually was from him. After I opened up the newest message and then backed out to the conversation list, all the contact names were corrected.
  • My mother said she was really confused when she went to check her messages yesterday and there were 7 conversations listing the same contact name. She had to open each conversation to figure out who each message was from.

I've used Windows 10 on three previous phone models - Lumia 640, 640 XL, and 950. The issues described above are unique to the three Idol 4S phones that my family is using. I've been using Windows phones since Windows Phone 7 first launched, and it is the only smartphone platform that my family, including my brothers, have ever used.

One brother is getting a new Android phone this weekend that I'll have to set up and teach him how to use, and I have a feeling that the rest of my family will reluctantly be switching to Android soon as well based on this experience with one of the last remaining Windows 10 phones.

Chime in: What's the best Windows tablet for a non-techie?

iPads are popular Christmas gifts, combining high-quality design with a simplistic iOS-based user experience. But what about Windows tablets?
Surface tablets are gorgeous and powerful, but you typically want to get a keyboard and a stylus to get the most out of them, and even then, not everybody is a creative type who needs the full power of inking. They're also expensive.
For casual tablet-style computing, Windows 10 Mobile would have been an ideal OS for such devices, but alas, we all know what happened there. Windows 10 S is still in its infancy, and ARM-based Windows PCs haven't yet evolved into products that might rival iPads for casual use.

Hence, hopeful fans have dubbed Microsoft's elusive mobile device the "Surface Phone." But since the device isn't a phone, that name won't work.

Surface Pro as a Consumption Device?

I use a Blackberry KEYone as my DD now and loving it. Because the screen is small I've decided to start using my Surface Pro more for consumption (FB, Insta, etc.) when I'm around the house.

While I've always used the device for music or Netflix, I never really used it for social media. Boy...I've been missing out! FB could do with more updates, but Instagram and the various Twitter clients are good. Again, I've used them before but not so intentionally.

How do you like your Surface for consumption (social media, music. Video, etc)?

Android or iPhone for Windows user?

Hi guys,

I have been 100% Windows-exclusive since Lumia 920, back in 2012. Currently on Windows 10 desktop, laptop, Surface Pro and Lumia 950XL. Outlook.com is my main email/calendar/address book, OneDrive my cloud. The only thing I have skipped was Xbox - but it is not overly relevant in this story, I think.

I'm planning to stick with my 950XL for another year... but I'm starting to consider where next. For those who have already made a switch - what do you think, which platform is easier to integrate in my Windows ecosystem? I have experimented a bit with Android - since Nexus 5X is my work phone - and were not fully happy with Android's native apps incapability to sync both ways basic requirements such as contacts, calendar... but it looks like it can be worked around with Outlook for Android. I used to have iPhone before Lumia 920, and - much as my memory serves - it worked quite nice with Windows, but then again last iOS I was really using was iOS6, so I have no idea how well new iOS goes together with Windows 10.

Any observation, recommendation, experience... much appreciated.

Nick

10 games you won't want to miss during the Steam Winter Sale

As 2017 draws to a close, Steam has launched its annual end-of-year sale, offering a huge number of titles at low prices. Here's ten of the best games you can pick up during the event.
'Twas the big Winter Steam Sale, and all 'cross the net,
gamers held tight their gift cards and searched for titles to get.
From RPGs to Shooters, there were games aplenty,
most at a price that was well under twenty.

People rejoiced as the store pages quickly loaded,
while their Steam wallets' contents were quickly eroded.
They dashed to their libraries, one by one with their haul,
and merrily cheered as they clicked on "install."

They anxiously waited for their games to be ready,
with cursors poised over the play button, steady.
And as their installs were finally completed,
all real life priorities took a backseat, defeated.

Friends, these are the stories of Winter Sales past,
but be of good cheer, for they're sure not the last.
One is live right now, as if on cue,
so here are ten games that are just right for you.

Plantronics RIG 400HX review: A great-sounding budget Xbox headset

A solid, very affordable Xbox One headset that might have passed you by.
Plantronics makes some great headsets, like the impressive RIG 800LX. But not everyone wants or can afford to spent a lot on an expensive, high-end headset. That doesn't mean you have to settle for a lousy experience, though.
That's where the RIG 400HX comes in. It only costs $50, and while you don't get anything particularly fancy, you get quality where it matters most. It's definitely the wheat that stands out amongst the chaff.

AdBlocker Complaints

Have you come to this site only to have it complain that you're using an ad-blocker (I use ghostery)?

Well for fun. I paused mine and there were 62 different advertising, social media, and site analytics trackers identified on the main wpcentral webpage. As soon as the site loaded the fan on my computer kicked-in to try to keep up with all of them as they swallowed my cpu.

I would be happy to provide WP Central with some ad-revenue as I read their content, but it's a bit ridiculous. To be fair it's not just WPCentral that does this, but most mainstream media websites.

"newbie" questions

Picked up an early Christmas present and upgraded from L640 to the 950. So far I am liking it, battery life isn't too much worst then the 640, and everything seems to work fine with build 15254.124. Have noted a couple spontaneous restarts however.

So a couple of questions to current and former 950 owners:

Iris scanner- yeah or ney?

Camera- auto or custom settings you feel are better?

Also related to the camera- is there a protective film that needs to be removed from the lens? There appears to be a clear film, primarily on the metal portion. But it does have a perfect 5 mm circle cutout were its not on the glass in the lens path, so maybe its supposed to stay?

Thanks!

Need some advice / help please.

OK so I'm probably one of the older people on all the Mobile Nations sites so I need some advice from some experienced gamers please. My wife was bugging me to buy a new game system which we haven't owned since the original Atari back in 1981-82 (its OK go ahead and laugh now :) we do own a Wii but it got boring fast. I was about to buy an Xbox One X or S until I realized that game systems are totally not what they use to be, playing games on the consoles with 2 or more controllers and playing with people in the same room has seem to become a thing of the past. After spending hours and hours online reading it appears that a used xbox 360 may actually be able to do what I'm looking for, just play games with the person sitting next to me not online. I really didn't realize there are hardly any systems or games that you can just pop in a disk and play. So my question is, am I correct on the 360 systems, are they capable of just playing with the people in the same room without looking for people online to play with? Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can give me.

How Microsoft is prepping the enterprise for its folding mobile Surface

Pieces seem to be coming together for Microsoft's inking-focused folding mobile device.
As I've stressed as far back as 2015, this device will not be a phone but will have telephony capabilities. It will run Windows Core OS, a modular version of Windows that can be tailored to device types but isn't compromised in power like Windows 10 Mobile.
Will Windows phone fans finally get the device of their dreams?

We've stressed that this device will not compete with smartphones (though many consistently miss this point). It will also be enterprise focused. Consequently, it won't be marketed to or positioned to appeal to consumers. Though you'll likely be able to get one.

Before launching this device I believe Microsoft would prime its target audience and the industry for the computing scenarios in which it would fit. In fact, if you listen closely to how Microsoft's positioning Surface, Windows Ink, and Whiteboard it seems that's exactly what it's doing.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 continues to receive much-deserved flak for its microtransactions, as well as how said systems are tied into core gameplay mechanics. Mutant Entertainment Studios saw a spot in the market for a game that focused solely on loot crates, and since 2017 appears to be the year of these torturous beasts it only made sense for such a title to be released on Steam.
Even better, it's called I Can't Believe It's Not Gambling. The best part of all; it's as good as you'd hope it would be.
