Did the last WM10 change blue-tooth pairing?

Last week I updated the infotainment software on my 2016 Ford so had to re-pair our phones (L950LX and Idol 4S). In the past, I would bring up the blue-tooth screen on the phone and tapped on pair in the infotainment system of the car and the car would show up on the phone and the phone would show up on the car's screen and you confirmed on both and done.

This time neither the phone or the car displayed the other, but the car asked if I wanted to search for more devices (or similar wording). I clicked on that and both saw the other and I proceeded like before. I didn't think much more about it and didn't know if the car or phone was operating differently than before.

Fast forward to today and I loaned my Cadillac to my son who was visiting and offered to pair his phone (L640). But neither displayed the other when trying to pair, just like when I last paired our phones in the Mustang. But the Cadillac didn't offer to search for more devices. So the phone could not be paired to the car. Neither the phone or car were bumping up on limits of how many pairings were possible.

The only common denominator is phones using the latest WM10 although I can't rule out some random failure of his phone's blue-tooth. Didn't have time to try with another car before he had to leave to preside over a wedding.

Seems he was ordained by some internet church for $25 because that was cheaper for his friend (who had been my son's best man) than paying for a "real" minister.

I hope something wasn't changed in WM10 that makes it so only cars that have the extra logic (whatever it might be) to try to find other devices to pair.

Video received by text not playing

Well, this forum seems to be fizzling out but, I'll try anyway...

I've read where others here have not been able to play videos received by text. I'm getting the still image (snapshot) with a play prompt above it. Video just doesn't play. I have contacted HP but, has not been resolved. The latest was doing a re-install of the operating system with the recovery tool.

1. Anyone able to play videos from a text using the default message app?
2. Anyone gave this issue and get it resolved? How?

Never had this issue with my Nokia Icon...

Thanks

Does Cortana/invoke work with Nest thermostat?

I've tried a dozen commands to get my Invoke to do anything on my Nest. "can't find the device named thermostat, or temperature." the name is Kitchen. When I asked to set kitchen to 76. Cortana says sorry try to set a scene like aurura.

I went to the Nest site and searched for Cortana and for invoke. Pretty much 0 results. I searched through all the devices and apps that" works with Nest". No Cortana and no Invoke. The most obscure and limited sounding devices work with Nest, but Cortana on every Windows 10 device goes un-noticed.

Am I missing something? I'm connected through my Nest account to work with Cortana and my cortana Home skill is connected to Nest.

Commands I tried:
Set temperature to
Set kitchen to
Change temperature to
Make kitchen warmer
Make it warmer
Set thermostat to
Change thermostat to

Surface Pro 3 - wonky Windows key on new screen

I've rescued a Surface Pro 3 - it had something wrong with the original screen where random phantom touch activations would occur in a column down the screen left of center.

I've pulled the screen (broke it to all hell doing so) and popped a new one on. The new screen works fine, touch is fine. Except the bezel Windows key is registering touches when there is none.

I've removed and reinstalled both the touch screen and "Surface Button" drivers and the problem continues.

Is there a known issue here before I send the screen back or is it just my luck that I got a bad screen?

Cheers.

Microsoft caught in crosshairs of gender discrimination claims amidst #MeToo movement

In the wake of Microsoft's far-reaching inclusion efforts in hiring practices, product design, and company culture it is morbidly ironic that the company finds itself in the crosshairs of a potential class-action lawsuit for discrimination against women.
I have made it my business to report on the admirable efforts Microsoft has made to embrace overlooked populations such as African Americans and people with disabilities. Hiring practices, support organizations, scholarships, intentional product design and more have been infused with Microsoft's inclusion mission.

Does anyone use notifications?

I've been wondering if anyone uses notifications in Windows 10. I find myself just clearing the list all the time without looking at it really cause I'm anyways looking at the apps I work with that usually the notifications listed are old anyway. I've put it in Do Not Disturb me or whatever is called now too because every second or minute something comes in and is annoying.

I guess most of my feeling isn't so much Windows related. It's just we are so inundated with notifications from everything, they've become another thing to manage.

How do you notifications, or use them to help you in Windows? In interested in ways you use it so I can perhaps do the same. Thanks

Windows Central app on Android has been broken - is it on purpose?

The last update broke a vital aspect of having an app for Windows Central.

Further investigation suggests a hack of some sort.

I get my RSS feeds and read them to decide whether I need more than the headline. Previously, if I opened the (feedproxy.google.com) link in chrome, that revealed the www.windowscentral.com/ web address, which would automatically open in the app. Brilliant.

Now it doesn't. FAIL.

Why? Because the app designers have CHANGED the "open in app" Web addresses so they no longer include www.windowscentral.com! Insane!
The list of addresses it will open includes utterly unrelated Web site addresses like wpc.com which is something called Winter Park Construction. I've never seen that address till investigating the problem today.
I can't edit that.

The forum is still correct.

Thankfully for the moment, the partner Android Central still allows the app to take the focus for their full address.

I try to upload screenshots but the forum cannot accept png - which is what all android screenshots are now. What a faff on converting them so they will upload to illustrate my point.

I've also reported in the app comments last week, and by email today LRM_EXPORT_20180331_090624.jpgScreenshot_20180331-083419.jpgScreenshot_20180331-083523.jpgScreenshot_20180331-083455.jpgScreenshot_20180331-083500.jpg

What will Windows 10 restore after a clean installation or after setting up a new PC?

I did a clean install of Windows 10--not an upgrade--and I just want to describe what I've had to do so far, and find out if there is a better way to do a clean install. My old laptop was running Windows 10 Pro, the Fall Creators Update, and it seems like it is having hardware problems; it is eight years old and to me, it has reached the end of its life. I pre-ordered a Surface Pro with LTE from my local Microsoft Store (there's a location near me), and it will be available for pickup on May 1st, and my mom gave me her old laptop, which she isn't using anymore, so that I would have something to use until then. Her laptop is a bit more recent than mine, but it came with Windows 7, and I need Windows 10 in order to have access to my library of apps from the Microsoft Store, which obviously won't run on Windows 7. I bought a boxed copy of Windows 10 Home from my local Microsoft Store. I booted Mom's laptop from the Windows 10 USB drive that came in the Windows 10 Home box, deleted all partitions on the hard drive, and did a clean install of Windows 10.
There are a few things that did not happen during the installation process, and I'd like to find out if any of them can be made to happen the next time I do a clean installation or when I get a new PC, such as my Surface Pro.
1. First, the Windows 10 installation did not put the latest version of Windows 10 on my PC: it installed the Creators Update, not the Fall Creators Update. I didn't realize this until a day or two later, because I didn't think to check for updates (because I assumed that the Windows 10 installer would simply install the latest version) and I never got any notifications from Action Center saying that an update is available (at least, none that popped up on my screen; there may be a hidden notification in Action Center that I haven't seen yet).
1. a. Why didn't the installer simply put the latest version of Windows 10 on my PC? If I recall correctly, during installation, the installer asked me to select a wifi access point; I thought that it was necessary to establish network access early on so that the installer can download the latest version of Windows 10 from Microsoft's servers.
1. b. Why didn't I get any popup notifications from Action Center? (the kind that pop up on your screen and don't go away until you interact with them)
2. Since on my old PC I was running Windows 10, and my Windows profile was tied to my Microsoft account, and I'd set up OneDrive, Office 365 (Personal edition), and had installed apps and games from the Microsoft Store, I thought that upon doing a clean install of Windows 10, or setting up a new PC that's running Windows 10, upon me entering my Microsoft account login credentials, Microsoft would automatically set up my PC for me with all of the system settings, files from OneDrive, and apps from the Store that were on my old laptop. Here is what *actually* happened: when Windows finished installing, only the apps that come with Windows 10 were installed, and my Start menu layout was as Microsoft made it, not the way that *I* had made it on my old laptop. My Edge favorites and reading list were synced, and if I recall correctly, Cortana showed me a few web sites I had been to on my old laptop, in case I wanted to pick up from where I had left off (I'm not positive that Cortana did this, but I THINK that she did). However, my history has not been synced. Not all of my Edge settings were restored: on my old laptop I made Google my default search engine, while after this clean installation, it is Bing. I'll probably find other things that have not been preserved; those things that I mentioned above are what I've found so far.
2. a. Obviously, Microsoft would not go to third-party websites to download and install the apps I had previously downloaded from outside of the Store. I just wish that there was a way to quickly restore all of the Store apps that had been installed the last time I used my old laptop.

Note: before I installed Windows 10 on my mom's laptop, I replaced mom's laptop's hard drive with my old laptop's hard drive, because my old laptop's hard drive is actually bigger than my mom's laptop's hard drive. Next, with Mom's laptop still off, I inserted the Windows 10 USB drive that came in the Windows 10 Home box, turned on Mom's laptop, pressed the ESC key to enter the boot options menu, and selected the USB drive as the device to boot from. (HP's splash screen said to press ESC to enter the boot options menu, so that is how I knew which key to press.) When the installer got to the part where I needed to select which partition to install Windows 10 on, I selected each partition and then selected 'delete'. I deleted each partition, one after another, until all that was left was "unallocated space". Then, I clicked on that unallocated space, and then clicked the button to install Windows 10 on that. Which means that the installer created whatever partitions Windows 10 needs.

Microsoft simply can't afford to blow the opportunity that is Sea of Thieves

Microsoft is moving Xbox more towards service-type games, but outside of Minecraft, it hasn't really proven it is capable of delivering a top-tier live game. That needs to change, starting with Sea of Thieves.
Sea of Thieves is already proving to be a huge success story for Microsoft and Xbox, both in terms of retail sales and Xbox Game Pass uptake. While critical reception of the game has been polarizing (to say the least), millions of players are flooding into the game, and seem to be having a whale of a time.
Sea of Thieves was atop Twitch in popularity during launch, and it still remains a strong contender a week later, beating Minecraft, Rainbow Six Siege, and various other hugely popular games at the time of writing. Whether that trend continues remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain – it's clear that Microsoft has a huge opportunity with Sea of Thieves — one it can't afford to squander.

Now another issue is that, while the music control feature on the band works perfectly when I'm using a wired headset or just listening directly through the phone speakers.
But I noticed that when I connect to any Bluetooth speaker (or headset or even car unit) im unable to use the music control feature, the music control screen keeps flickering when I activate it.
This is the problem, has anyone experienced this, Plz help me.

IMPORTANT NOTE: when I followed the steps to fix the old notifications problem( reinstalling the band app and restarting the phone) the above mentioned problem of music control WAS NOT THERE and I was able to control the audio from my Bluetooth speaker from the band itself but when I connected to another similar device THE PROBLEM CAME BACK AGAIN.

Sea of Thieves to get ship-spawning fix next week to reduce griefing

You won't keep on getting killed by the same ship anymore.
Sea of Thieves recently crossed two million players, and as more gamers experience the title, new problems emerge. One of the most pressing concerns at the moment has to be the fact that ships respawn too close to where they were last sunk. This can be frustrating for an inexperienced crew because encountering the same vessel again and again, and possibly losing loot again and again, can be disheartening to say the least. It might even be enough for some gamers to quit altogether.

Band with iPhone X?

I just discovered that my new iPhone X will not see my Microsoft Band. I unregistered it from the old iPhone 6 and did a reset.

Bluetooth on the X doesn't see it but the 6 and my desktop machine both do. I was able to pair the iPhone X with the desktop so I know its Bluetooth is actually working.

I suspect that it has something to do with how old the Band is and the fact that iPhone X has Bluetooth 5.

Does anybody have this specific combination working and what did you have to do? Does Band 2 work with iPhone X? I might be able to get the wife to swap bands, or phones, she has an iPhone 8+ and Band 2, working just fine.

2. AI in it's current form is nothing but a toy. No one even understands what it is. Yet Mirror uber Nadella is betting so hard on AI. There is nothing wrong except it ain't help nobody.
3. Foldable tablets will not revive Microsoft. It looks kind of a lame concept.
4. Forcing people to leave everyone a change of plans occurs is not a sign of a healthy and democratic organisation. If Anything, it showcases Nadella's dictatorial talents.

I think he should leave.

Why Sea of Thieves is right to let you forge your own adventure

Sea of Thieves has come under fire for being too non-linear, but I don't think the game could exist in any other way.
The Xbox One platform has been starved for a heavy-hitting exclusive for a while now, and with the launch of Sea of Thieves, it looks like that hunger has finally been satisfied. A week from release, the game hosts over two million players and has topped sales charts.
Sea of Thieves review
Despite all of this success, many people have been turned off from the idea of playing the title due to the fact that the game only provides minimal information about the game world and how to complete activities in it. However, I believe that the open-ended and mysterious nature of Sea of Thieves is an integral part of why the gameplay is so satisfying.

What Microsoft's recent reorganization means for Windows (and you)

The future of personal computing is changing, and Microsoft's recent major reorganization reflects that. But it also feels confusing.
Microsoft's announcement of its reorganization of the Windows team – effectively breaking up the Window Devices Group – was seen as a surprise by many. For others, the writing had been on the wall for the last few years.
While cloud and edge computing bolstered by artificial intelligence (A.I.) sound like buzzwords, many tech companies including Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft are betting big on them.
What does former Windows chief Terry Myerson's departure say about Microsoft's faith in Windows 10 and the future of the consumer market? It's complicated.

Why is PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds still getting bad reviews?

PUBG continues to be a mixed bag for the battle royale community.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a highly addictive experience, but the incredibly popular game is losing support and continues to draw negative attention to bad performance, hacking, and a lack of region locking. It's why the game continues to receive mixed reviews on the Steam store, and why Fornite has really shot up in popularity.
There are a few reasons why the battle royale game isn't doing too well in the eyes of gamers.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice looks absolutely stunning on Microsoft's new console.

NVIDIA's lineup of discrete graphics chips (GPU) for notebooks hasn't gone stale, with the GeForce MX150 effectively replacing the aging GeForce 940MX. It was announced about a year ago, but it's starting to show up in more and more high-profile laptops, like Samsung's 15-inch Notebook 9, Huawei's MateBook X Pro, and the ASUS ZenBook. The MX150 also promises considerably increased performance over integrated processor (CPU) graphics, but what can it actually be used for? Let's take a look.

Problem is however that when trying to use the project/extend option on my laptop, it says that the hardware does not support this (in yellow letters). Is there a way to fix this or is there some dongle that adds this support?

Prediction - Where is tracking headed? Outside-in, Inside-Out or Laser?

I've been lucky enough to try all three tracking solutions currently on the market. The Vive lighthouses (infrared laser), WMR (optical, inside-out) and Rift (optical).

Daily, I use the Vive and believe it to have the best tracking solution, but lately I've been impressed with my HP WMR headset's inside out capabilities.

My view is that lighthouse, although technically superior, will be overtaken by inside out tracking.

I am a product manager for a software company so not a developer per se but I'm interested to hear from VR game devs on their predictions for the future of tracking in VR apps and games.

Cheers,
Dave

Astro A40 TR with MixAmp review: Elevate your audio game on Xbox and PC

If you're looking for a competitive edge, or just better audio, the Astro A40 TR should be on your list. With a mix controller to balance your audio and rich 7.1 audio, it's a compelling option.

I really love mix controllers for audio on Xbox One and PC. As a game streamer, being able to control the sound mix is critical for separating console game sound between yourself, the stream, and voice comms, and my daily driver has been Turtle Beach's Elite Pro Tournament combo. However, it's not the only available solution.
Say hi to the Astro A40 TR with MixAmp Pro, a similarly priced bundle that brings across many similar features. We'll be doing a deeper comparison between these two headset titans in the future, but for now, here's what sort of experience you'll get with the wired Astro A40 TR on Xbox One or PC.
