Lumia 720 Screen Replacement Only

Hi Guys,

My Lumia 720 Screen is cracked but my display is working fine. I tried replacing in local stores but they say that both Screen and Display must be replaced which will cost around 2.8k. Makes no worth to shell so much amount right now for 720.

Do you guys have any idea about a store in Bangalore where in only the screen can be replaced ?.

P.S : Don't suggest to buy a new phone , already did that :)

why is my lumia 435's search home and back button not working?

I upgraded my Lumia 435 to windows 10. I'm not sure if its the update or my hardware that is giving me problems. but to my best of knowledge I think its the update that caused the problem because it was not giving me any trouble. Longer SB battery life after Oct 28 firmware update

I was surprised to get a notification of the firmware update on Saturday as I hadn't read anything about it at that point, and I'm not an insider or anything. I went ahead installed and, and while I've only had a couple of cycles to go by so far, I'm getting significantly improved battery life. I used to get 5-6 hours, now i seem to betting 7-8. A good 40% increase, not bad!

Anybody else seeing the same thing?

Fingers crossed it continues... Would also like it if it fixes battery drain during sleep (pre hibernate), don't know about that yet.

Double tap stopped working on my 950XL

The firmware update a few months back allowed my 950XL to open with double tap, but eventually the phone's apps (like all of them) stopped working, so I had to do a hard reset (ugh). Even though I'm on the Fast Insider ring, double tap doesn't do anything. Any ideas how to get it back?

Bluetooth failure after hard reset

After multiple problems I performed my first hard reset on my L640 running Insider Preview with the latest cumulative update (351), my bluetooth will not connect. My JBL speaker works fine with my windows laptop with the same OS.
The bluetooth was working perfect prior to the reset.
Any ideas?

Surface Book Insider 14955 - Firmware Failing to Install

With the latest release of firmware I am having three parts of it fail to install. Surface UEFI, Surface System Agg, Surface Embedded Controller all fail. Anyone else run into this? The system is very unstable - Explorer crashes and I am forced to reboot using the ALT+CTRL+DEL menus, takes hours to boot up and shut down.

Are there any W10M compatible drones?

My dad has a 950 and just bought a drone but he can't use the camera on it as the manufacturer doesn't have a w10m app. My dad is now thinking of getting an iphone so he can enjoy his new toy. I told him to hold off until I could find out if there are any w10m options for him to drone with. I heard Parrot had an app but it doesn't appear to be downloadable on w10m and the reviews say it doesn't work even if you can download it.

Anyone know if there are any good w10m compatible drones?

Advice from the community... What next?

Yup... It's another one of those threads, but after reading and reading and reading, I'm just ending up more confused. :eck:

I've had my trusty Ativ S since launch and have been holding out to replace it in hopes for the fabled "Surface Phone" that I've just accepted will not come any time soon.

After the rather disappointing hardware event that confirmed no news :angry:, I've decided it's time to move forward. I've tested latest Android phones and I'm totally frustrated with the experience. iOS, I've never liked. So it's back to WM10 for me and hence the request for advice.

I'm having a difficult time deciding on what to get next. I hear/read from many that the best experience is the 950XL, but I'm concerned with the impending discontinuation this December. The post that showed the nice capture of the Microsoft Device screen saying "Lumia Phones no longer supported" was, telling to say the least. Which leaves me with the Acer Liquid Jade Primo, the HP Elite X3 and the upcoming Alcatel Idol 4S. Looking at most posts, it seems most of the community dissuades the Acer Liquid Jade Primo as a choice, which now leaves us with two.

Now, I'm leaning a bit towards the HP Elite x3 because I'm hoping that the heavy HP investment will equate to greater support both from HP and Microsoft. But the non user replaceable battery, missing dedicated camera button, NFC but no Wallet support and price kind of deflate me. Among a few other nitpicks.

In the end, what do you think? Should I just go with the tried-and-true 950 or 950XL? Should I wait to see what the Alcatel has to offer, since it seems specs are comparable to the Elite? Should I just bite-the-bullet and go with the Elite?

Wireless Continuum?.?.

So this may have been answered many times but here goes...

Can you and is it worth it to wirelessly use continuum and to use a Bluetooth Xbox one s controller for some games and watch Netflix to the tv?

I have a Lumia 950 and am interested in looking into continuum but I'm not So sure if want to be wired in as ill be around 12-15 feet away from my tv screen.

How do you use continuum and are you happy with it? Is it smoother than apple airplay? (the lady uses her iPhone 6 wirelessly all the with amazon prime movies to the TV through the apple TV.) I'd like to use my own windows gear and not rely on her iPhone at times.

Motion detection, steps, and Microsoft app

So one of the things that I used to use a lot was the step counter to track my miles of walking in Boston all day.

I used a step counter app, and also Microsoft Band App.

I do have a Microsoft band but don't really use it very much only looking for the functionality of the device to count steps like the 950 XL used to.

The HP however seems to count almost every motion as a step and I wind up with thousands of steps at the end of the day

Any clue if I'm doing something wrong or if it is a bug, and if HP might consider addressing this

Certainly not an enterprise issue but just another issue that was fun and useful

Am I missing phone calls because I am on band 12 on T-Mobile?

I don't understand how this stuff works but I do think I have been missing phone calls with my Lumia and not sure if this is the reason why?

If I check my phone now I am on Band 12 LTE getting data. This is the VOLTE band but as we know it doesn't work on Lumia. So as long as I am on Band 12 (basically everywhere i live) I may be missing phone calls? Or is that not how it works?

How do i delete an app that failed to install?

I tried to download Doodle God Blitz a few months ago and it failed. I dont know why it failed, but it did. Since then, it has shown up on my App list as Pending. The option to uninstall it is disabled. I dont really care that its on the list, but the app still tries to receive updates frequently. When i go to the store I can always see it either as installing or installed with errors. Is there any way to get rid of it?

OneDrive Desktop and online have different files

Hi,

I just wanted to give OneNote a try and also One Drive but it does not work. So I already had some files in my One Drive folder for a long time. When I set up my One Drive on Windows 10 it downloads these files to my pc.

But when I wan't to see these files online, they are not shown. One Drive says, they are not available. Also when I create a folder in One Drive online, e.g. a folger with a Power Point presentation inside, it is available online, but I can't see it on my pc.

I created some notebooks with One Note. In One Note on the PC I see those (and on the Smartphone too), but they are not available in One Drive online, therefore I do not see them even in One Note online.

I use Google Drive and Dropbox and it works very easy and well but with One Drive I have a lot of problems. It just does not work and I do not understand why. I set up the thing a few times now. One Drive App on my phones works fine, it shows me exactly the content that I have on my PC. All folders and documents are shown - but everything that I do in One Drive online, is just not there.

It feels for me like the One Drive desktop client (and the Android App) are using something different. But I have just one account and one Office 365 subscription. I am completely confused and don't know how to solve this problem.

in short: Sync between Win 10 desktop and smartphone (one drive and one note) works fine, but not between one note online in the webbrowers. This is annoying since I wanted to use the one note webclipper for chrome.

Someone has an idea?

HP Dock connectivity is lacking

After being disappointed with the regular Microsoft Phone Dock, I was even more perplexed by the HP Elite X3 dock.

It has a USB-C connector on it for connecting to a PC, however the data connections do not go through to the phone! So you cannot transfer files from a PC to the phone with the dock. This makes no sense, as that's what its on your desk to do. Be useful. Not to sit there while your phone is connected to a cable on its own.

Being intrepid, I opened the dock and thought I'd hack the connectors together and make it useful, but HP encapsulated the USB-Connections.

Does anyone have a theory as to why Microsoft nor HP docks connect like a cable?

The HP dock has a network connection, but you can't get files via the network. It doesn't appear on the network. It has Wifi capability but you cant get files using wifi other than through a cloud provider. And it's full size DisplayPort connector will NOT work with an DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, whereas Microsoft's will. This all seems rather lousy and poorly thought out to me.

Weird Issues using 14393.351

I have recently noticed the following minor issues on my 950.

1. When awakening the phone the screen seems DIM. I do not have Adaptive Brightness on. I have to press the Power button on and off and then the brightness seems fine. It does not always do this but it does often.

2. I also noticed that photos posted on Facebook are all jumbled up. Sometimes it corrects itself. I was even able to save a copy to my photos and it still jumbled up.

3. Sometimes I see an email notification and when I select it it's not there in my inbox. I am pretty sure I did not delete or move it using my desktop computer,

I have not noticed any app crashes just the anomalies above.

Automatic time zone is 5400 miles off

Yesterday we ended daylight saving time. I noticed that my 950 - 14393.321 didn't switch time, so I checked the settings, thinking that time was not set to adjust automatically.

It was, and the automatic time zone was set to Windhoek, Namibia, 8700 km from southern Sweden where I live. While both time zones are UTC+01:00, Namibia is in the southern hemisphere (where I've never been), so they enter daylight saving time in september.

I switched the automatical time zone off and on, and then I got the right one, but after a couple of hours it was back to Namibia. I've given feedback.

Any suggestions, besides using manual settings?

Help, 950 XL auto reset, bug MS Store UK or B2X?

OK, so quick lowdown. I purchased the 950 XL from the MS UK Store back a year ago.

It has developed the dreaded auto-reset fault, which appears to be battery related (only occurs when not charging and around 50% or less).

I've gone through support, which sends me to B2X who in broken English told me to send it in for repair (after I've done a hard reset, reflash, etc). I read the instructions and it tells me "not" to send in any battery's. So I think to myself, but if it's a battery issue, how are they going to diagnose it? So I check with B2X again to make sure. I'm told that if the engineer teams find that it's a battery issue they will contact me (you can already see where this is going). So off the phone went, just got it back today, drain the battery back down to around 50% and lo and behold the restarts/freezes happen again.

All B2X did was reflash the phone with the .318 firmware for my "repair".

I tried contacting the MS Store again when B2X left me waiting for ages checking for what to do next.

So my question(s):

1. Should I do the repair again and this time check the repair for the battery instead?
2. Should I simply bug the MS Store over the phone instead to get them to send me another 950 XL or refund me as B2X clearly are not able to resolve the issue?

Windows 10: 3rd clean install, still everything is ReadOnly

Hello.

Been running Windows 10 since the first Insider build, and done resets about every 6 months or so.
Now however the reset failed multiple times, so I decided to do a clean install from USB.
Downloaded the latest Insider ISO, installed it and everything went smoothly, or so I thought.
Installed the things I use daily (listed below) only, and was about to start using the PC.

• NVIDIA Drivers
• MS Visual Studio
• Unity 3D
• PhpStorm
• Ubuntu Bash for Windows

I made some changes to a PhpStorm project located on my 3rd HDD, which is used for current projects only, and constantly got errors in PhpStorm about it being unable to save. Found out that suddenly EVERYTHING was Read-Only, even if I unticked it (white box) and triple-checked that I was the owner of all files and such.
Decided to do a new clean install but with the official version, not an Insider build.
Downloaded Media Creation Tool, prepped my USB, installed (with a full format of the OS drive), but still the same issue.
Did another clean installation to make sure nothing went wrong, but everything is read-only no matter what I do.
I am able to create directories, but I immediately lose write access and is unable to even create a new file in that directory. And this issue expands onto ALL drives, including USB drives, which works perfectly when connected to another PC.

Any ideas on what I could do? I'm on my third day now without being able to do about anything on it :unhappysweat:

Some Internet Pages Funtions not working - Missing Credentials?? - post update W10?

Hello! I have some problems with my Windows10 x64 on a high-end laptop.

I don't know if it is post Anniversary Update or after I run CC Cleaner. I had this problem 6 months ago and it resolved after some Windows updates.

The problem is with Windows10 itself, I tried on a Virtual Machine(Ubuntu) and there are no problems.

The problem is: On all 3 browsers I can not acces some fuctions on many websites. EX: Sometimes after I automatically sign in in Gmail, i can not read any emails, I can not delete them, etc.(Oops… the system encountered a problem (#400) - Retrying in 7s - for reading)

EX: I can not sign in in multiple sites, I can not submit this question or reCAPTCHAs(Cannot contact reCAPTCHA. Check your connection and try again.),etc

I have a stable high speed internet .

I tried a to return to a restore point but with no luck...and I can not roll back to a previous verison of Windows:(

Windows Live (Photo) Gallery

Hi!

Still using the duo Photoshop Elements and Windows Live (Photo) Gallery 2012 to manage my pictures.

In my opinion, Windows Live Gallery, even if not updated anymore, is a great app to manage thumbnails and do simple edition (for more complex edition I use then Photoshop Elements).

My question is: Windows Live Gallery is meant to disappear if I'm right :-(( (although Movie Maker will be converted to UWP). So which app/software do you advise to replace it, the best to manage thumbnails and do simple edition? In other words, which software is the most similar to Windows Live Gallery?

Missing contacts on outlook.com

All my contacts disappeared and then partially reappeared. I believe this is in releation to outlook.com upgrade.

However, not all contacts have reappeared, about 50% are still missing.

Skype status as pending even though I uninstalled it from my phone.

When I double click on it, stores opens with skype app. Store gives me option to launch skype and the it launches successfully. I uninstalled the app from settings->Storage, but it is still there in my app list showing it as pending. Store now gives an option to install.

onedrive app on Lumia 950

Hi,

Have a problem with the onedrive app on my Lumia 950.

It tries to open (shows blue screen with cloud icon), can wait up to 20 seconds like that then just closes. No error messages etc.

Build version is 10.0.14393.321

I even joined insider and updated to 10.0.14292.351.

Have done soft and hard resets, same issue!

Why does "Mobile Hotspot" work, but not the netsh "Hosted Network"?

When I use the netsh command to set and start the "Hosted Network", I can set the settings fine, but starting the hosted network yields "The hosted network couldn't be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.". I have already tried the fix where you enable the "Virtual Adapter" device in device manager, but it did not change anything.

On the flip side, using the "Mobile Hotspot" option inside of the settings starts fine and works correctly.

I am an "old school" artist who is just now trying to get into digital art. I recently purchased a Surface Pro 4 with Window 10, and have just downloaded the Sketchable app. I see there is a help tutorial with the app that looks like there is voice-over explanations that go with visual tutorials. However, I can't hear anything! NOTE: The speakers on both the computer and the app show they are active and enabled, but still I hear no sound! Lumia to (not from) PC sync problem

My Lumia 950 and Lumia 1520 would sync new Calendar and Contact entries with each other but would not sync new calendar and contact entries with my PCs (Office 365) on the same Microsoft account. From PCs to the Lumia, however, has no problem as are all Outlook emails and Office files. I've chatted with both my regional Office and Lumia help teams and patiently answered their repetitive queries from 3 or 4 staff in total. I also duly followed their suggestions step by step, which actually were steps I'd tried before on my own, and to the same futile ends. The Office 365 team asked me to seek out the Lumia team and the Lumia team, surprise, surprise, came to the same conclusion and suggested me to seek out the Office team. You can imagine my frustrations. I'd appreciate help on this.

Nokia Lumia 950 Block and Filter Functionality

Hey guys I was hoping the community here could help me with a frustrating issue I am having with my Nokia Lumia 950. I will try to keep it short and right to the point.

Basically there is someone that keeps calling my phone (normally several times a day) and has gotten very irritating. It is really not a big deal, there are no threats, it is not a collection agency, it is simply just someone annoying I would like blocked.

Okay so here is what happened:

When I first blocked this person the situation was literally perfect. Because I do not have my voicemail setup on my cell phone. Therefore, they cannot leave a message to further in pestering me. Also when they called it never had a "missed call notification", the only way I knew they were trying to contact me is because you can slide down the menu from the top (not sure what it is called) and it has "block and filter" notifications there.

More recently however, when this individual calls me it will appear (like a lot of cellular phones) on my screen for a split second and leave a "missed call notification". I am not certain about the split second that it shows up, but I know that it did not appear on my missed calls. This is seriously annoying as hell.

This is mostly because I use my cell phone as my business phone and also the reason that I do not have my voice mail setup. Because if someone needs to get in touch with me they can send a text message or I will call them right back when I recognize the number they are calling from.

Therefore, having the individual calling me several times each day is very annoying because I constantly have to check it (each day) to make certain it is not someone important trying to get into contact with me.

So basically, is there anyone familiar with this? I have tried restarting the device, pulling the battery, unblocking and blocking the individual again, and nothing works. Did this person just persist in calling me so often that they just broke the block and filter on my phone or something?

It would be very nice to figure out how to get them off my missed call list again. Thank anyone in advance that tries to help me.

Don't understand the Pink - Surface Dock

[This odd post is about the Surface Dock for either Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book, decided to drop it here, mods can move it]

I have decided to replace my [2008 Dell XPS 430] desktop PC with my SB/SP4 using the Surface Dock. Besides the scaling issue, which I still have but found a work-around...I have one other issue and it's kind of annoying. Anywhere there is supposed to be very light blue or light grey colors such as the sides of the twitter feed, top bar of WC forums, top bar in file explorer and a million other places, there is a light pink color instead. Don't know why this is happening or how to fix it. I have also tried it on another monitor from a different company (Lenovo vs. Dell) and it still does the same thing.

If I took a screen shot I don't think you would be able to tell what I am talking about so I took a picture with my phone. See if you can make out the pink colors I am talking about.

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciate. I know it is not the dock because I returned one I bought from the MS store and its happening with this new one. I know its not the SB because I also have returned that (for another reason) and got a new one, plus it happens with the Pro 4. I also know its not the monitor because I tried it on two different monitors from different manufacturers. I am thinking it is just the firmware in the dock or software in Windows 10.

How can I stop my previous calendar entries disappearing from my Nokia Lumia 520 phone?

I have been using the calendar on my phone only (Windows 8.1), and do not use the calendar in my Outlook account on my PC. I'm assuming the phone is syncing with this Outlook calendar which is empty. I only want to sync my email (via my Optusnet account) on my phone and NOT the calendar as it's more convenient to use the phone calendar.
I can't find any way of doing this.
I've seen suggestions for turning off calendar deletions via Outlook.com, and although I have an Outlook.com account I don't use it.
Any suggestions for fixing this so I can keep the calendar history on my phone?

Which one should I buy, 650 or 640xl?

I've searched the old forums, but still can't decide!
Read some great reviews about 640xl, and it's battery life. Also read that it's processor is slightly better. On the other hand, 650 is newer, and has 16GB internal storage and it will probably be supported for a longer period of time. But overall, read more positive stuff about 640xl, except for 650's looks!
I prefer larger phones, but the 8 GB storage and the fact that 640xl is more than 1.5 years old are kind of holding me back from buying!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Getting errors in Event Viewer!

Hi! I'm getting errors in event viewer. I think they are false positives. Hardware error and edge stooped working. I don't use edge, but It seems to be working just fine.
Anyone seeing these issues?? My hardware is also good! I'm a worry wart and I keep a eye on my PC. I really don't think I have a problem, but I'm going to keep a eye out. I'm thinking Microsoft doesn't want us to get any rest. LMAO . I don't see any problems here?

Decisions decisions: Lumia 640 xl or Motorola Motor G Turbo Edition?

These handsets are within my price range. I like the Lumia better(not a big android fan). I have some concerns about Lumia that makes me doubt whether it's the right phone for me or not. For example, is the 1 GB of ram and 8 GB of internal storage enough for future Windows Mobile updates and application updates? Or Will there be any future updates?(Witnessed Microsoft abandoning ship with the WP7).
On the other hand, the Moto G has 2 GB of ram, but it runs on Android which requires more ram than Windows Mobile. So, 1 GB vs 2 GB seems not to make a big difference.Or am I wrong?
I've tried both Android and iOS, and didn't really like either of them. It's like everyone says, iOS is more user friendly, but Android is more customizable (The customizations I've seen people do on their phones really weren't that special.)
Both these phones are around $200 where I live(to be exact, Motorola is about $50 more expensive). So, what do you guys suggest? should i give Windows Mobile a try?

Debating getting another 950

Hey all. So I've had some 950 and XLs before and always seem to have went back to iPhone. I finally got the 7 plus and boy what a disaster. From the coil whine to no headphone jack to the awful new home button I hated... long story short I returned it. I also ended up getting a 4k dell xps 15 for $1999 which is an incredible machine with specs higher than a $2400 MacBook pro. After waiting for the new MacBook pro when they were announced I realized that Apple threw a big finger in the air to their customers and I am done with apple. My wife and kids can use their idevices to call and communicate with me through Skype. Anyway I m now using an unlocked PRIV which is a cool phone that I've used before as well but the Google ecosystem is just not my thing. I don't like their information selling business model. I also use like 3 apps. Feedly amazon and this one.

What I miss most is the camera of the lumia series.

I Take lots of pics and nothing comes close.

My question is this... does it make sense to buy a 950 with a student parent discount at $359 including the dock from msft directly? I will most likely set up an extra monitor in the kitchen and use the Internet with it and the dock while having breakfast and my morning coffee.

Is the phone still worth it. Especially at $359 with dock?

Again I am using priv but I don't use Google anything. I use LIVE for exchange and calendar, office for work and onedrive for everything important.

Running WDRT device recovery tool on a Apple Mac

I know, there is no such thing and I need to run it under Windows.

The problem: I don't have a Windows box, only a Mac. And I'm not really excited by the idea to shell out 100+$ for a Windows license just to run the WDRT occasionally.

So what are my options? Is there any (older) Windows which I can obtain for free legally? Maybe a test/demo version or such. Maybe something with a timeout, runs for an hour or so.

Or some VirtualBox solution?

Any hint appreciated!

TPM clearing issue

I have Time2 technology windows 8 tablet, which is intel Baytrail.

Recently i updated it to Windows 10, and i wanted a fresh restore of the Tablet. Now i encounter with this error

How do I create a shortcut to a particular troubleshooter in Win10?

We have a terrible ISP, and something keeps happening with the gateway or the network that messes up our internet connection. The way I've found to fix it is to go into the adapter settings and diagnose the wifi. It just resets the adapter, but it fixes the issue. I see this problem a lot daily, as do my parents, and my steps are too complicated for them to remember.

I'd like to create an icon on the desktop that'll either run the wifi adapter troubleshooter or maybe would just reset the wifi adapter if that's easier. That way I can name the thing to tell my parents to click to fix wifi and maybe stop hearing a ton of grumbling about 'stupid computers' and 'stupid internet' and lots of 'what the h*ll???' I've found some similar tutorials online, but nothing that quite matches what I need to do. Help's appreciated!

Data Usage from "Deleted Accout"

Hi there,
I own a Lumia 650 for about a month and have a problem with high data usage. Last month it ate through my 2 GB mobile plan. :angry:Data usage in System shows "deleted account" and "system" as big users. I had to change the email-address from my microsoft account - perhaps thats the culprit?

I already did a hard reset, turned off auto backups and message sync...

Any suggestions highly appreciated!

Battery usage

Could You please write how many battery charge Surface Book uses during one hour due to web-surfing in Microsoft Edge?
The question arises because of large gap between the lifetimes with and without web-surfing of my Surface. For brightness level 50%, it can work up to 16 hours from the one charge (I use LaTeX compiler, irregularly Wolfram Mathematica etc.). If, however, I use Edge for web browsing, the lifetime is twice smaller and even worse.

In past few days this error message comes when trying to sync email. Says "problem syncing eas.outlook.com at the moment. Wait a little while then try again.

Phone is up to date with latest software. Mail eventually comes through after a few trys but then next time same recurs.

Outlook calendar live tile & call divert problem

Hi, I have lumia 640, latest win 10, done few hard resets, after latest outlook calendar update few days ago I hoped this problem will be fixed, but it still persists, i.e., live tile does not update date. Any idea what to do? Can not understand this since MyCalendar works fine!

The other problem I have is, that the menu for setting a call devert (settings, extras, network, ...) opens and immediately (after 2, 3 sec) closes by itself, so you don't have time to set a divert. I think this was not an issue with a previous versions. Any tip would be welcome, since I'm slowly losing patience with being a devoted win phone fan. Thx, Mark

Is the Surface Pro line a good alternative for an iPad/Mac combo?

Since the Surface Pro line is a two in one, and because my MacBook Pro died three months ago, I am really considering selling my iPad Air and switching to the Surface Pro line (4, or whatever comes next) to use it as a tablet for simple streaming, and media and also as a full PC for editing documents, presentations and taking notes + playing Xbox One on its screen when I am in a place with no TV (or TV being used by others).

I would like to know how the Surface Pro functions as a tablet so I really wish if you guys tell me your main opinion about it, and if possible also answer the following questions:

1. Can the tablet be kept on 24/7 for like a year (as in locked screen / standby mode). Like a typical tablet? How is the battery in such case?
2. While in standby / screen locked mode. Does it have support for Push notifications and will I actually hear a notification sound? Like a notification for email, Facebook. Also most importantly calls from Skype / Viber contacts?
3. Is an antivirus required or should I just depend on Windows Defender + Malwarebytes? I already have a Norton Security for 5 devices license but I am worried this might slow it down (I am targeting the i7, 16 GB RAM model because I won't be upgrading before it literally dies, just like my 2012 Mac)
4. How does it feel streaming YouTube videos or Netflix on it. Do videos fit the screen like a TV, or it looks like playing a movie on iPad due to different aspect ratio?
5. Regarding the Type Cover. Does the color change with age? Even the Signature Edition one?
6. Is the tablet scratch resistant? Not talking about screen since it will always be covered by a type covered unless I am using it anyways. I mean the tablet body itself.

SMS / Messaging / Skype preview

I have to start this by saying I much prefer Skype preview over the desktop version, but I have tried my hardest to use Skype preview to send and receive SMS messages using my 950XL's allowences.

Unfortunatly it makes a real pigs ear of it, ruins the People app, contacts need linking, then they unlink, at times some do and others don't, then in the preview you end up with contacts all over the place, and then sometimes it just doesn't work, you lose the ability to send SMS, you have two options of Skype and if the number shows up it often asks to verify the number and still doesn't work.

I have spent many many hours of frustration with this and I know what I am doing with it, but until it improves I have had to take the SMS function off and put my Messaging app back on my phone screen.

Just nosing around on my PC and SP3 and noticed the messaging app that never really did anything since they took SMS messaging off of it in favour of Skype preview and I noticed it now shows all my SMS's.

I got my phone and checked the messaging app and there is a new setting of Sync across devices and it was turned on.

On checking on the PC and SP3 it is read only at the moment, but at least it's 50% of the way there.

I really want to be able to send SMS from my PC, but couldn't live with the Skype preview mix as it ended up busting two app and my pedantic lifestyle, so please MS, give us the option to use messaging to send SMS until you get Skype preview sorted or I can happily live with two working apps, one for each function.

GDrive.Net - A Google Drive app that is better than the browser

I have been using GDrive.Net for a while. I liked it at first because of its simplicity; and my feeling towards the app grew more and more. Now, I like it much that I would like to help spread the word among our Windows 10 users.

The Gdrive.Net app is 'simple' to use for us having used Windows for years; and it uses the screen real estate very well. You almost do not need to re-learn anything.
While simple, the app, however, contains such rich features that it is awarded 'EPIC app' by Ad-duplex. With the full version (only £1.49) you gain access to all features including Windows Hello; Dark theme; Auto-upload; Ability to manage multiple Google Drive accounts in the same app (well, I cannot try this one for obvious reason - I have one Google Drive account).

One killer feature of this app is that it can display 'ALL' file types you uploaded to Google Drive. This is great for me since my browser (MS Edge) does not show my many DNG photos that I uploaded (After waiting for upload complete for a long time - I almost killed myself after I couldn't find them in my browser, then I found this saviour).

If you have not tried this app, I strongly recommend to give it a go on 'ALL' your devices. Let me know your thought of this app.

Cannot install build xxxx. Getting error 0x8007045d after it tries to install

Hello all,

I am currently on build 10.0.14946.1000 trying to update to build 14955. I have done multiple hard resets, but still am unable to install the update. It sees the update, completes the download, but then throws the error when it tries to install the update.

Any thoughts? The times I've done a hard reset, I've loaded from a backup then tried to install. Should I try updating before loading a backup?

ATT Lumia 830 to T-Mobile

Can the Lumia 830 from ATT be used on T-Mobiles 4G LTE service? T-Mobile used bad 2,4, and 12 but the 830 on ATT doesn't have those bands built in. Just the bands 1,3,7,8, and 20 but they have the same MHz. If anyone could help me clarify this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

My Internet Explorer has disappeared - how do I get it back?

I noticed that all of the icons on my screen (after the latest insider fast update) for websites I've saved using IE are now blank white pages. My Internet Explorer is gone! No search shows it, trying to change .htm to a new default (from Edge) doesn't show IE as a possibility, and I can't find anywhere to re-download it from. I like Edge, but you can't drag a website icon from the address bar to your desk for easy reference later, so I want my IE back. Ideas?

Installation Error

Current Build 14946. Yesterday i was received RS PREVIEW UPDATE 14955. With no issues 100% downloaded but when installation started and it progress 1% , showing error with code 0x801882c1. I was thinking about the app conundrum we have in the Windows community. From the behemoths like Banking Institutions to the little indie dev, what costs are thrown at you, and why someone like a big company like Amazon or US Bank won't support the platform? Financially, they've made a decision that it isn't in their interest to continue support. So on average how much do different apps for either desktop, tablet, or mobile devices actually cost to produce and maintain?

Lumia 950 or Acer Liquid Jade Primo?

I've tried all the major platforms, but I would say I have the least overall experience with Windows phones. In the past I've used a Lumia 521 and Lumia 822. I've used Windows Phone 8.1, but not Windows 10 Mobile.

Currently I am clinging to my BB10 phones, hopping back and forth between my Z30 and Q10. But the HP Elite x3 got me interested in Windows phone again.

I am well aware of the current state of Windows phones - app gap and all. I know Microsoft is killing the Lumia line and letting third parties do the phone hardware. They are also focusing primarily on enterprise customers.

The parallels with BlackBerry are interesting. BlackBerry is also killing its in-house hardware design and production and licensing its software and brand to third party OEMs. They have already started doing this with their own flavor of Android, but the likelihood of a third party licensing BB10 and actually producing and selling new handsets that run it is very remote.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has the resources and long-term vision to keep supporting Windows 10 Mobile. While they may be putting their mobile hardware on hold, they have strong partnerships with several OEMs and I expect to see new Windows handsets coming to market regularly.

In short, I think Win10 phones have more of a future than BB10 phones, so I'm considering switching.

If money were no object, I would get the $1300 HP Elite x3 bundle with Lap Dock and Desk Dock in a heartbeat. But like most people, I'm on a budget and even the phone by itself is out of reach at $700.

I want Continuum, so I've been looking at the Lumia 950 and Acer Liquid Jade Primo. And trying to weigh the pros and cons of each.

Here's what I've come up with.

The pros I see of the Acer Liquid Jade Primo are:

- Comes bundled with dock, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, and case
- Dock stands the phone up so you can see the screen
- Same internal specs as Lumia 950
- Lower res screen might translate to longer battery life
- Good front camera

The cons I see with the Acer are:

- It appears it has not yet received the Anniversary Update and nobody knows if it's Acer's or Microsoft's fault
- Lower res screen than Lumia 950
- Battery not user-replaceable
- No fingerprint sensor or iris scanner
- Rear camera is meh
- More expensive than Lumia 950
- Smaller battery than Lumia 950

The pros I see with the Lumia 950 are:

- Microsoft hardware, so sure to receive timely updates
- Better screen than Acer
- Better camera than Acer
- User-replaceable battery
- Iris scanner
- Cheaper than Acer
- Larger battery than Acer

The cons I see with the 950 are:

- Doesn't ship with cool accessories (although MS is currently including Display Dock free in a promo)
- Display Dock doesn't prop it up, would need to buy a third party stand for that
- Front camera is not as good

So I'm leaning towards the 950, but would appreciate any advice or any first-hand impressions about each device.

Cortana wants a pass?

I have all my music on a Pc, the Pc runs JRiver.
I have Groove on the Pc and also on my laptop, I also run JRiver on my laptop served by the JRiver server on my Pc.

I have Groove on my laptop using the library on my Pc and it is able to play music from my Pc on my laptop.
I have no music at all on my laptop.

When I ask Cortana on my laptop to play my music she will play my music but I have no control over what she plays.

If I ask her to play a specific album or band she tells me I need a groove pass, if I ask her to play ''my music'' she just plays random songs from my library stored on my Pc, well its really on an external hard drive connected via usb3 to my Pc.

Any ideas how to make her play a specific album, or artist?

Lumia 950xl won't receive whatsapp messages in lock screen when docked

Lumia 950xl won't receive WhatsApp messages when it is docked(generic OTG adapter, not Microsoft dock) after it goes into lock screen mode. It will receive messages with wi fi. But I prefer to not have the wi fi on, thus the dock.

I can use WhatsApp fine while docked (Ethernet connection, wifi off) but when I leave the phone inactive long enough for the lock screen to automatically kick in it no longer receives messages from WhatsApp.

Why do I keep getting signed out?

I use a Lumia 830 on release ring and most days it works fine. But once a week I usually have to restart it because Cortana, Xbox app, Groove and basically anything that uses my account will sign out and can't sign back in. No other device I have does this so I don't think it's the account. Anyone know the problem or a fix?

Some things to try when Windows 10 updates fail!

Hi Please move if not the proper forum! Here are things to try if you're having problems with Windows 10 updates. These are some things that have worked for me.
The first thing I would do is a sfc /scannow and DISM How to Repair Corrupted Windows System Files with the SFC and DISM Commands
Even if the SFC command doesn't repair any files, running it will confirm that no system files are corrupted and you can continue to troubleshoot your system with other methods.
Next I would try to reset Windows updates. Here is a easy link from Shawn Brink that will get that done for you with a .bat file! Windows Update - Reset in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Sometimes you may have an issue with Windows Update such as not being able to download or install updates, error messages, not being able to search for new updates, etc. These kind of issues can occur when the Windows Update database or components are corrupted, one or more services related to Windows Update are not running, etc.

Resetting the Windows Update components and history can usually solve these types of issues.
If you don't want to do a clean install or a reset, I suggest a in-place upgrade repair!

The repair of Windows 10, can resolve many problems in Windows 10 functionality and some times is the most reliable and quickest way to fix the Windows 10 malfunctions. PS I suggest always disabling your anti-virus program. I don't know why Windows updates are so difficult to down load. Some users have no problems and others have problems. I have had a few problems. The in-place upgrade repair was the answer for me. It will take 2hours+ to complete, so please be patient.

Fast Ring Apps don't find updates

I'm on the newest fast ring build (14955) and some of the newest fast ring apps don't seem to be updating.

This includes:
- Skype Preview
- Outlook Mail
- Groove Music

Interestingly enough it appears MSN News did update to the most recent version, but that appears to be the only one.

Sync reading list across devices?

I have a PC, Lap top and a Lumia 640 phone, all run windows 10. All current and updated.

Syncing my reading list is patchy, sometimes it works across all devices, sometimes it only works across two devices instead of three and sometimes it doesn't work at all.

All devices are set up to sync, all use the same MS account and all are in the same WIFI network through a BT home hub.

All devices except my phone are set to stay awake and wont go to sleep if left unattended.

So, how does syncing work? Does the device send the information to Microsoft as soon as something new is added to the reading list? And then Microsoft sends it to all devices signed onto the same account? How does it actually work?

Unlinked contacts and now texts are under wrong contact

I have a Lumia 928 8.1 phone. I don't ever want contacts linked. The last update automatically linked many contacts. I've been un-linking them as I find them. Something happened this week and a close contact with a long history of texts (that I want to keep), got linked to a contact with no phone #. I un-linked them. Now that long history of texts is showing up under the guy with no phone number. And it says "Read-only message". I started to delete the guy with no phone number, but it said it would delete him from phone. I worried that meant it would delete the text chain, so I canceled the delete. How do I get that chain of texts back to the right guy?

Is the Surface Pro line good as an iPad replacement (Tablet)?

EDIT: Retarded iPhone auto correct. I meant iPad!

Since the Surface Pro line is a two in one, and because my MacBook Pro died three months ago, I am really considering selling my iPad Air and switching to the Surface Pro line (4, or whatever comes next) to use it as a tablet for simple streaming, and media and also as a full PC for editing documents, presentations and taking notes + playing Xbox One on its screen when I am in a place with no TV (or TV being used by others).

I would like to know how the Surface Pro functions as a tablet so I really wish if you guys tell me your main opinion about it, and if possible also answer the following questions:

1. Can the tablet be kept on 24/7 for like a year (as in locked screen / standby mode). Like a typical tablet? How is the battery in such case?
2. While in standby / screen locked mode. Does it have support for Push notifications and will I actually hear a notification sound? Like a notification for email, Facebook. Also most importantly calls from Skype / Viber contacts?
3. Is an antivirus required or should I just depend on Windows Defender + Malwarebytes? I already have a Norton Security for 5 devices license but I am worried this might slow it down (I am targeting the i7, 16 GB RAM model because I won't be upgrading before it literally dies, just like my 2012 Mac)
4. How does it feel streaming YouTube videos or Netflix on it. Do videos fit the screen like a TV, or it looks like playing a movie on iPad due to different aspect ratio?
5. Regarding the Type Cover. Does the color change with age? Even the Signature Edition one?
6. Is the tablet scratch resistant? Not talking about screen since it will always be covered by a type covered unless I am using it anyways. I mean the tablet body itself.

Last question for those who bought it from the US and took it back home. How is the Surface Support / Repair service from Microsoft? Do they honor its warranty? Does having an extended warranty (redirected to US) have any benefits outside the US?

A few moments ago, I tried to download App from the store on My PC and I couldn't error message appears coded >> "0x800704d5" & couldn't Continue Purchase even if with free apps, I tried on another Windows 10 Laptop and same error couldn't download.

I tried more apps and same error -_- , using the Mobile as hotspot fix it but still The issue present via normal Home WIFI conncetion , I tried :

• Resetting the Router.
• Restarting the PC.
• Tried Scanning for windows errors & Hard Drive errors & everything is clear.
• Disconnecting and ReConnecting to My account from the PC
• Tried To use different MS Account and same problem.
• Date, Time & Location are Accurate.
• Cleared Windows Store Cache.
• Tried Both Free & Non-Free Apps in Both PCs and same Issue.

**** PLEASE, I Need a fix to it, It is ** F u c k i n g ** annoying & I've seen some people stuck with it for long time , please help

Phonetic keyboard

I am unable to download phonetic keyboard for my native language Bengali, it was there in my L950 xl and I was using it but after insider build 14955 and after a hard reset it stuck in preparing download and unable to download ,I tried a soft reset, removing and adding it again , nothing helped, can anybody help please.

is anyone else having problems with HERE Drive directions on their nokia lumia 810?

I used to love this app for driving. But I think it has gone haywire. Not sure why. I guess it can't get updates anymore, but sometimes it takes me it really nutty directions.

Battery Life post Windows Anniversary update?

Just wanted to hear from Surface 3 users on their experiences post update. I'm thinking of updating but see that a lot of posts are up of people with Pro 3 and Surface book owners complaining of battery life. Thanks for any insights.

Protip: Moved to the Opera Beta browser and it seems to add an extra hour to my Surface 3 battery. Turning off the animation helped too.

Should you buy the Surface Book with Performance Base for gaming?

The Surface Book is shown on the product page playing games, so should you invest in the latest one if you're a frequent gamer?
We have to be careful not to call it a "new" Surface Book, as it's really not. But the refreshed high-end model has some notable improvements over the existing one. You're getting twice the graphics power and plenty more battery life in something that's virtually identical to what you can already buy.
We're also asked fairly often with regards gaming, just what mileage you get on a Surface Book. We've already addressed the current top-spec model and what kind of gaming experience you get on it, but what about the Performance Base? Is it one for gamers?
